Book Reviews of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life

Book Review: Informative, but carelessly edited

This book is worth reading and using. Arranged in alphabetical order by food name, it is packed with information on a variety of foods--their history, lore, and health value, plus one recipe per food entry. In addition, many of the recipes use multiple foods from the list of 101 foods, so cumulatively, there are a lot of recipes here that are packed with the helpful foods.

A lot of the recipes sound unusual, delicious, and actually do-able, unlike many books with recipes that are too fussy or require hard-to-obtain ingredients.

QUIBBLES

The reason I detracted one star is that there are too many editing errors and contradictions, sometimes two or three per food. (I didn't keep a list; I just kept noticing the errors.) Most errors have little consequence beyond perhaps inconveniencing the reader. For example, for one recipe (Bi Bim Bop, a brown rice dish), a preparation and cooking time is given of 30 minutes. However, when you read the recipe, you find that you are asked to prepare a number of the ingredients, then refrigerate the mix for 3 hours or overnight before continuing. To me, that sitting time is part of the preparation time. Someone who started the recipe without reading it carefully first, expecting to have it done in half an hour, is in for a surprise.

Since there are so many noticeable errors, I wonder how many ones crept in that aren't noticeable--errors of fact, for example. This doesn't entirely detract from the usefulness of this book, but I wouldn't rely solely on this book for information about each food.

Another quibble I have is there are no separate index entries for the recipes. Although the index rightly focuses on the ailments that the foods are said to be good for, the recipes are included only under the food(s) they are associated with. So, for example, if you want to look up Bi Bim Bop, you must remember that it is indexed under "rice, brown." If you don't remember? You have to flip through the book looking for it.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Overall, for the contribution toward eating healthier foods, both in the information in this book as well as the many delicious-sounding recipes, this book gets 3.6 stars (rounded up to 4) and a recommendation to read it.

However, if the prospect of reading about 101 foods is a bit daunting, and/or you want a book that is easier to use and that organizes the information better (and so far hasn't had any errors that I could spot), you might look into SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods That Will Change Your Life. There is a huge overlap between the two books in terms of foods covered; though 101 Foods covers a number of spices not addressed in SuperFoods Rx. However, what the authors of SuperFoods Rx very cleverly did was to combine foods into groups, so in fact they cover far more than 14 foods, but in such as way that it is much easier to remember what types of foods to eat. For example, there is a chapter on blueberries as a super food, but when you read that chapter, you find that all other manner of berry can be used for very similar results as well. If you are only buying one book on the value of foods, I'd recommend SuperFoods Rx.
