Book Reviews of 2008 Writer's Market

Book Review: Valuable reource & reference
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a writer and this is my second edition of the Writer's Market, which is kinda one of a writer's main reference guides to resources for publishing. It also has handly info on contests. I like the fact I can go to a particular section and read about all the different magazines and trade publications for that subject in one place -- many of which I did not know about -- and quickly assess what they look for and how much they pay. One thing, however -- you should always check to be sure the same contact person is still at the workplace -- editors are quick to dismiss unsolicited work and queries and if it looks like you haven't done your homework on the publication to see who is still on the masthead, they'll toss your submission or letter into the round file.

Book Review: If You Had Only One Source...
Summary: 5 Stars

...and you don't, but if you did only have one source as a writer, there is none better than the Writer's Market, year after year after year. This benchmark bible of publishing does not in fact contain everything the writer needs to know in order to publish, but it comes close. And when used with a number of companion sources, it is as complete a set of resources as exists. Well organized, intuitive, almost totally up to date and certainly informative and educational, this standby is a must each year.

Book Review: Very useful information
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been looking to buy Writer's Market for awhile. I was surprised with all of the inforamtion that is stored within it's pages. From Freelance writing to Greeting Card companies. Not to mention that there are other Market Books out there. If you are going to submitt poetry to be published, there is a seperate Market book just for poetry. I find this book very usful, and it will help me in the right dierection of where to send my manuscript.2008 Writer's Market2008 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market (Novel and Short Story Writer's Market)

Book Review: Great starting source
Summary: 4 Stars

I've purchased several copies of The Writer's Market. It's a very valuable source for freelancers, no doubt about that. The book contains addresses and contact information, tips and pointers for a broad range of publications. My only quibble with The Writer's Market is that its section containing agent and book press information isn't really in sync with what I need as a freelancer who writes for magazines. Bottom line: well worth purchasing but a freelancer needs to make sure to cover all bases. If you regularly read a publication or have your own area of expertise/interest, check out submission guides from those on your own if they are not listed in The Writer's Market.

Book Review: A Comprehensive Resource For All Writers
Summary: 5 Stars

PROS: One of the best resources for writers. It's well organized and shows the who's who of the publishing world.

CONS: It would help if there were more guidance on writing book proposals and query letters. The advice is there and it is helpful, but I would like more. However, I didn't feel it was the job of this book to get into that (there are other books that tackle that issue), so I'm still giving the book 5 stars.

CONCLUSION: If you want to write for magazines or you want to publish a good, this resource covers all your bases.
