Book Reviews of 3rd Degree (Women's Murder Club)

Book Review: Whoosh!
Summary: 4 Stars

This book reads like it was written at top speed by Patterson and Gross ON speed (just kidding, guys, don't sue me)and that's the way I read it, too...I don't think I drew a breath until the last page.

I'm not going to try to pretend this is great literature and brilliantly written. But it sure moves! And it has some surprises, ugly and otherwise.

The plot involves some leftover Berkeley radicals, and having grown up in that era, it was jolting for me to read about some initially peaceful hippie types who morphed into radical terrorists for the sake of the cause--whatever that cause might be. In this book, a similar leftover from the Sixties has a cause all his own--and a very modern, 21st-century way of expressing it. Think Twin Towers toned down to San Francisco.

It is vital that Lindsay Boxer and a handsome, sexy member of Homeland Security, along with just about everybody else in the larger law enforcement community, catch "August Spies," a dead-serious domestic terrorist cell that has already committed terrifying high-profile murders--using enough deadly poison to take out all of San Francisco, and bombs capable of the same thing.

Linsday enlists her pals in the Women's Murder Club--and one of them doesn't make it to the end of the book. I haven't even processed that yet, it went so fast. Along the way, Lindsay and the Homeland Security guy, Joe, start a serious romance. Have I left anything out? Oh yes, the kitchen sink...

This is nothing less than pure fun. It's not a book to analyze, just to enjoy.

Book Review: Another Enjoyable Thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

Lindsay is just finishing up her jog when a neighboring building blows up. One minute, it is there, the next it is gone. Racing inside, she manages to save a 10-year-old child from the flames. A group named August Spies claims responsibility in the name of the poor nations in the world. Then they claim another victim, announcing they will continue to claim victims every three days through the G-8 summit scheduled for San Francisco next week. Can Lindsay and her friends piece things together in time? And what will happen when things take a very personal turn?

This book starts with a bang (literally) and doesn't let up until the final page. While it doesn't have quite the big twists in it the last one did, I was caught in the web that is the plot the entire time. All four leads contribute something this go around, although it is definitely still Lindsay's show.

Because the focus of the book is the plot, the characters suffer. This is really brought home when something tragic happens. I normally cry fairly easily at fiction, but it didn't happen here.

There is a sub-plot involving spousal abuse. I was actually surprised at how believable I found it considering the characters involved. However, the resolution to that storyline was abrupt and not at all satisfying.

So yes, the book has two strikes against it. But it was an enjoyable, fast read. Fans of thrillers won't want to miss it.

Book Review: 3 stars for the third book
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to admit that I wasn't blown away with this one. It was a good solid story but it lacked the heart thumping action that the first two books had. The 4th brings back the action in full force!

In the first two books we are introduced to the Women's Murder Club, a group of four women that share many common interests and come together for fun, drinks, and when need be, to help solve crimes. When they are working together they have every imaginable angle covered and manage to solve the case everytime. In this book Lindsay is facing her toughest case yet, a terrorist group is targeting people in her city, and its getting personal.

Lindsay is out for a jog when a home she is admiring across the street blows up. She decides to go in and look for survivors, of which she finds a young boy. Everyone else in the home died, a family. When the organization that is committing the heinous crimes identifies itself as August Spies and starts making demands, the department of homeland security is called in to help out. This brings a foxy man that goes by the name Joe into the picture, and a nice little romance side story develops.

The Women's Murder Club finds themselves the targets of this radical group of terrorists and must work together to find the killers, before they kill hundreds of people.

Book Review: Wow-This is more than just a Great Thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

In 3rd degree James patterson not only produces great thrills and fantastic characters he also provides a very profound message that is surprisngly scary. This book is fiction but something like this could very well happen one day considering the story focuses alot around protestors. The August Spies bomb this house in the first two chapters and as Lindasy and the Womens Murder Club delve deeper they realize a surprising motive which leads to sadly, one of the Women from the club to be murdered. Like with Pattersons last two murder club series there are those classic little twists and an even better ending that makes you feel satisifed. But unlike the last two this one delt more with politics and was very confusing at times. There was also more characters than usual and it was very confusing because alot of the characters had aliases which made it very confusing because you couldn't figure out which character from the August Spies was which. The way this book ends may for some people like me, send a chill down your back even though there is a typical happy ending but the message is very surprisng. Once again Patterson proves why he is one of the best if not the best at writng thrillers.

Book Review: 3rd Degree is a fast, enjoyable read
Summary: 5 Stars

James Patterson, along with Andrew Gross, has brought the Women's Murder Club back with the third book, 3rd Degree. San Francisco police homicide LT Lindsay Boxer goes jogging with friend Jill, assistant D.A., and witnesses the explosion of a townehouse. Lindsay rushes into the burning home and rescues a child, but before this nightmarish event occurs, she notices bruises on Jill and begins to wonder what is happening in Jill's life at home. The story doesn't slow down as more viscious killings occur, each one acknowledged by an unknown person or group called August Spies. Lindsay, Jill, medical examiner Claire, and reporter Cindy all work together along with newcomer to the scene, Joe Molinari, deputy director of the Department of Homeland Security, to solve a series of horrible murders. This book brings the four women friends closer than ever, and they experience love, laughter, sadness, terror and finally tragedy as the mystery of the identity of August Spies unfolds. I read this very fast, and as always, enjoyed Patterson's short chapters and the camaraderie among this group of women who band together along with the SFPD to solve unthinkable crimes.
