Book Reviews of 7th Heaven (Women's Murder Club)

Book Review: Something is missing
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a fairly decent installment in the series, and definitely better than the previous one, but I found that the cohesiveness of the story was not there. The good news are that the story moves at a fast pace that prevents us from getting bored and that the two main cases in which the main characters are involved are interesting. On the other hand, when the time came to make sense of it all, the story lost focus and I was left with a feeling that the logic connections that were presented looked more like leaps of faith than real links.

It has been a few years since we have started to see a clear difference in quality in Patterson's work. The Alex Cross series shines above anything else, with only a couple of missteps, and even these were decent books. However, I cannot help but feel like the collaborations work have been hit-or-miss. This one was not among the worst, since there are some that are almost unreadable, like for example You've Been Warned, but I cannot say I recommend it either. If you are a fan of the series you will probably have to do so and hope for the best in the next installment, but if you are not, do not bother.

Book Review: A Terrific and Satisfying Thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

This a fast-moving and engrossing thriller. It is vintage Patterson and Paetro, and it is a fine addition to the Women's Murder Club Series. As usual, it grabs you on the first page and won't let go. You have the usual, short chapters (really scenes) that contribute to rapid development of the story. San Francisco Police Detective Sergeant Lindsay Boxer faces two cases. In the first, the son of the former Governor of California is missing, and a prostitute is suspected in his death. In the second, a pair of college students are talking their way into homes, robbing the owners, tying them up, and burning them to death by setting the house on fire. (It makes you think twice about answering a knock at your door, doesn't it?) Lindsay and her buddies solve the cases, but not without some startling twists in the story. I must note one other thing about the book. It reads smoothly. Recently, I have encountered books by other authors filled with distracting typos and bad grammar. In contrast, the writing in 7th Heaven is crisp and error-free. Thank you, James Patterson, Maxine Paetro, and the editors at Little Brown. For readers who like thrillers, this is a great one.

Book Review: A Strange Book
Summary: 3 Stars

I have consistently read James Patterson's books throughout the years and have really enjoyed his work. I have read all of the Womens Murder Club books. However, I am not a big fan of his books which he writes with other writers. Neither story seems complete to me. It seems like Patterson just writes his part of the story but never really finishes it and the other writer adds his bit but doesnt actually finishes his story either.

I found this book a confusing read. Patterson wrote the thriller part of the book I would assume but, in the end, he left the reader hanging. I assume Paetro wrote the human interest story in the book. The end of this story was unsatisfactory too. Patterson is too good a writer to keep doing this.

Recently , I read one of his other books, "Step on a Crack" and it was even worse than this. Both stories left the reader hanging.

If I had known, I would not have bought these two books new. I would have waited to get them for 50 cents at a sale. They are not worth their price. The stories are just not up to Patterson's usual standard. He can do much better.

Book Review: A series back on track
Summary: 4 Stars

After the slight upswing in book 6 I was only cautiously optimistic about book 7. But I have to say he's back on track. This latest installment is more on par with the first three books, not the let-down that was books 4 and 5. Two main mysteries weave throughout the story, keeping your interest, even if some of the police methods and tactics (and a few of the fringe characters) don't seem, to me, at any rate, completely believable. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for a good fictional story, and this one delivers on the action.

The writing style is very engaging, drawing you in to the action. The characters are mostly enjoyable and well-written. The plot has just enough of a twist to make it original and interesting. And the series has left me wanting more, the best thing a series can do.

The only down sides to the story are the slightly over-melodramatic lives of the characters and a touch of incredulity in parts of the plot, but if you can get past that's it's a very fun read.

Book Review: Kidnapping, Arson and Murder, Fast-Paced & Very Good
Summary: 5 Stars

The Woman's Murder Club is made up of Detective Lindsay Boxer, Assistant D.A. Yuki Castellano, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn and Reporter Cindy Thomas, so when these girls sink their teeth into a crime in San Francisco, Criminal lookout.

In this outing popular and well liked Michael Campion, son of the past Governor of California has been kidnapped. We learn fairly soon that hooker Junie Moon was present when Michael was killed, but did she do it?

Meanwhile some guys named Pidge and Hawk are burning down the houses of the wealthy, while the wealthy are still in them, and that'll get the attention of the SFPD real quick, crispy rich people.

So there you have the crimes the gals are going to dig into when you dig into this fast paced book (and the pace is made even faster by Mr. Patterson's short chapters: 376 pagers cut up into a whopping 125 chapters. You can do the math, they're short.) I read the book in one sitting, just couldn't put it down.
