Book Reviews of A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander)Book Review: Sixth Installment of time travel adventure sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats! Summary: 5 Stars
With the inevitable approach of the Revolutionary War and an outcome he must take on faith, Jamie Fraser walks a tightrope knowing that he must soon renounce his forced allegiance to the King of England, that he will make enemies of old and dear friends as well as some of his family, and that timing could well determine all of their fates.
Of course life goes on in the meantime. Claire has made some good advances with her medical endeavors although her
As they tend to do, a plethora of births turn many worlds upside down. The reader will learn the secrets of Jamie's Aunt Jocasta, and Ian Murray will at last unburden himself of the details of his parting with the Mohawk tribe. The birth of one unique child will bring a change of venue and occupation for Jamie's adopted son Fergus, the death of one unborn will jeopardize the lives of Jamie and Claire, and the birth of another will force Brianna and Roger to make a critical decision.
With characters as powerful as Jamie and as controversial as Claire there is always the potential for creating equally (ok, almost) powerful enemies. No strangers to threat, the Frasers and company will face still more speculation, abduction, and abuse, as their times become more perilous.
What of the fire that brought Brianna to these tumultuous times, to warn her mother of impending doom? The readers will get an explanation for that as well at the conclusion of this installment. However as it is well known that there is at least one more title in the offing, the solution may only serve to create more questions. That alone would be enough to encourage the reader to pick up the next title.
A Breathe of Snow and Ashes was much more fast-paced and satisfying than the previous title, The Fiery Cross. While the multiple points of view made the book easy to put down at times, I do not see this as a particularly bad thing. Having waited three years for a copy of this book, I don't think it unfair to take a month or two to enjoy it. If Ms. Gabaldon sticks to her past answers to fans on the question, this series will end at the turn of the nineteenth century with a happy ending that will no doubt bring a tear to the eye. Stay tuned. --- Reviewed for PNR Reviews
Summary of A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander)Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon?s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.
Since the initial publication of Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon?s New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over ? and sold more than twelve million books. Now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.
The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.
With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence ? with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie?s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.
From the Hardcover edition.
