Book Review: Agatha Christie is angry...

... and should be throttling Madelyn Alt from the grave. If Alt had any true empathic powers (I'm assuming Maggie is her alter ego.) she would have felt it by now.
This book really does not belong in the mystery section, it is to vague and meandering in the trivial aspects of a very girlie lifestyle. Yes a murder occurs but it is pushed so far behind the day to day aspects of a sensitive immature young woman who really lacks the curiosity to unravel the clues which pile up in a rather glaring mound of red flags. The reader will wonder where everything is going? But Maggie will get to it all later.
In a nutshell the story is all about Maggie.
Maggie is an empath, if someone has a headache she will blackout! Despite being an empath Maggie gets crushes on boys who don't really like her and is strangely oblivious to the feelings of others through several events which could have been of use in a real mystery. Maggie is also bemused - alot! Then a snot-nosed teenager named Amanda is murdered. Maggie will get around to solving her death after she obsesses over the love-lives of others, her mother's pushiness, her sister's perfect life, a brother no one ever hears from, flirts with the supposed boyfriend of her friend and spiritual guide, a jaunt to the church, a ghost hunt which is "oh-so-scary", a pap smear, a quick cruise on an online blog that is too icky for her sensibilities, (despite the fact that highschoolers 12 years younger than her are stomaching it just fine.) plays with her brand new sparkly pendelum, (Does so-and-so like such-and-such? "Yes!") runs a few errands, obsesses over triple chocolate fudge brownies, has a grill cheese and a can of ravioli, hangs out at a bar with a guy who likes her but she obsesses over the one who dosen't, catches a few Magnum P.I. re-runs, and then gets kinda nosey with a few of Amanda's friends and classmates. Then after pages of taking her own sweet time, Maggie inexplicably gets impatient and does something very stupid. This allows for the murderer to confess and put Maggie in the ideal situation for a fairytale rescue. And of course the most important part: The boy who acts like he dosen't like Maggie, just might like her after all!!!
This series is perfect for anyone who thought Nancy Drew was too hard. Madelyn Alt can write, she should just swich gears and focus on young adult novels, as this is really where the reading level lies.
Hard-core mystery readers will avoid disgust and disapointment if they avoid this one. As for the paranormal? As in the author's words: It is the fluffy-bunny variety. Alt claims in her author bio that she is obssessed with the paranormal but she writes away from it as though she were afraid. If she read Phil Rickman (an unbelievably AWESOME paranormal mystery writer.) she would probably blackout, just like Maggie.
