Book Reviews of A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle

Book Review: Saga of the Campbell family
Summary: 5 Stars

Liza Campbell was born in 1959 at Cawdor Castle. She was the daughter of Hugh and Cathryn Campbell. To understand her life though one must understand some about her ancestors.

Her grandfather John (or Jack) was the 23th Thane of Cawdor. He and his first wife got divorced when their children were young and he married Elizabeth, the mother of Hugh's best friend William.

Hugh met Cathryn in the 1950's and married shortly afterward. When their first child was born Jack forced them to go to Cawdor castle because he thought that it would be nice to have the heir born at the castle. It turned out that Cathryn gave birth to a girl named Emma. When she was pregnant with Liza, Jack again insisted that the baby be born at Cawdor. When informed that another girl was born he told his son that her names could be Carolyn or Elizabeth. They named her Elizabeth.

Liza and her older sister, and younger siblings (two boys and a girl) lived in Wales for several years and things were relatively uneventful. Then when Liza was about 10 her grandfather died and the family moved to Cawdor castle to stay.

Thats when things started to get interesting. Hugh had been an alcoholic and a cheat, but the death of his father exacerbated these tendencies leaving a strain on not only his marriage, but his relationship with friends and family (including his step brother William who had married Carolyn's sister E.) After twenty years of marriage Hugh and Carolyn divorced in 1979. Shortly afterward he met and married Angelika Gräfin Lazansky von Bukowa. During his marriage to Angelika he had Cawdor opened to the public to gain money he needed.

During this time Liza went to boarding school. After graduating she went to Africa with her sister Emma and Emma's future husband. There she met William Athill. They married in 1990 and had two children before divorcing in 1993.

In 1993 Hugh died while Liza was living in Africa. After she heard she went to Scotland to pay her respects. During this time she found out how low her father could go. She suggested to her brother Colin who was then the Earl of Cawdor to go to Cawdor Castle for a vacation. He told her that they could not because Angelika owned it. For several hundred years the Campbell family had pasted it down from father(in one case mother) to son. Hugh broke tradition by giving it to his wife. Colin got another Campbell house, but Angelika got the furniture in that house.

This itself is a very interesting story, but Liza infuses the story with interesting stories from Scotlands past. One interesting story centers on the 12th Thane of Cawdor, Muriel Campbell as well as stories from a battle that happened nearby.

Summary of A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle

A Charmed Life tells the story of Liza Campbell, the last child to be born at the impressive and renowned Cawdor Castle, the same locale featured in Shakespeare?s Macbeth. It was at the historical ancestral home that Liza?s seemingly idyllic fairytale childhood began to resemble a nightmare.
Increasingly overwhelmed by his enormous responsibilities, Liza?s father Hugh, the twenty-fifth Thane of Cawdor, tipped into madness fueled by drink, drugs, and extramarital affairs. Over the years, the castle was transformed into an arena of reckless extravagance and terrifying domestic violence, as Liza and her siblings watched their father destroy himself, his family, and their centuries-old legacy.
Painstakingly honest, thoroughly entertaining, and sharply written, Campbell?s contemporary fairytale tells of growing up as a maiden in a castle where ancient curses and grisly events from centuries ago live on between its stone walls.
