Book Reviews of A Dangerous FortuneBook Review: Amazing piece of work! Summary: 5 Stars
I simply loved this book! It is absolutly true that you just can't put down this book. First I started reading it on the subway. Then it got so interesting that I stayed up late and read the whole book through in a few days. This is the best thriller book I have ever read. The characters are so alive and I could even identify with Hugh Pilaster and the way he felt. The author does an incredible job describing what each character goes through. And you want to keep reading because you want to find out the end of the story. It keeps you guessing, but you never know what to expect next.I think anyone who enjoys an intellectual thriller won't be able to put this book down.
Book Review: Suprisingly good Summary: 5 Stars
I had heard that Ken Follet wrote good spy novels, so I picked up this book. It's not a spy novel - it involves intrigue among a wealthy banker family in late 19th century London - but it's suprisingly good. I was expecting a piece of trashy pulp fiction, and instead got a book that was compelling to read. Sure, there's lots of intrigues among the rich and not so rich, within a family and not, but Follet brings more to it. The characters have depth, and the characters develop over time. I found myself thinking about the story and the characters after I read it, and I wish there was more to read. On top of that, it is solid, good pulp fiction, so it's a fun, easy read.
Book Review: absorbing read Summary: 4 Stars
I could not put this book down once I started it. The charecterization of the villianous charecters is brilliant, you actuly marvel at thier cunning!! Despite the numerous characters, the writer manages to keep your interest in all of them. A departure from his usual WWII stories, in this case you had no idea what would happen towards the end as there was no actual historical event in the backdrop that we all know the ending to. The only complaint I had was that the ending was rather insipid; almost like the writer was trying to hurry up and finish the book. But I find that the case with several Ken Follet's novels. All the same a good read.
Book Review: I couldn't put it down Summary: 5 Stars
This is the third book by this author I have read and I see a pattern in the three (Pillars of the Earth, World Without Ends, Dangerous Fortune). All three have a young man that is being beaten down by society or a powerful foe, all three have a young woman that is smarter and more able than society will accept, and a younger man in love with an older woman theme.
Even with those familiar themes, I really loved these books. This book (Dangerous Fortune) is set in the late 1800's and as with the other two books Mr. Follett really makes the reader feel like they are walking the streets of that period along with the characters.
Book Review: I keep coming back to this one Summary: 5 Stars
I keep coming back to this book because of the connection between homophobia and crime which Follett develops in the relationships among Micky Mirnada, Augusta Pilaster (the family matriarch) and Edward Pilaster. I have always felt that Follett presents realistic characters, and this book is no exception.
Follett is also a master at portraying the era whenever he writes historical fiction, and Dangerous Fortune does not disappoint in this regard.
Dangerous Fortune is also a work I would call Economic Fiction and Follett does an excellent job of portraying the finacial and banking industries of Victorian England.
