Book Review: A great encouragement for believers and non-believers alike

This book is an amazing account of just how powerful God can be in the heart of any person. Having previously read John Weaver's first book, "Inside Afghanistan," I would never have guessed what a transformation the Lord had worked in John's early life. In that first book he powerfully described his relentless passion for helping the people of Afghanistan with both their physical and spiritual needs. How could such a man not have been deeply spiritual from boyhood? Yet in his new book, "A Flame on the Front Line" John describes with great honesty and openness his long and rocky journey to become that man with a passion for serving people and the Lord. As a rebellious and worldly youth, he was about as far as anyone could be from being religious, much less a passionate missionary on the "front line." (His 180-degree turnaround reminds me of Nicky Cruz, in "The Cross and the Switchblade.")
John's book is worth reading for at least two reasons. First, it's a fascinating testimony of how he overcame great obstacles, mostly within his own heart, to realize he needed greater meaning in his life. Through encounters with believers who exemplified Christ in their lives, he discovered what he lacked. God created in all of us a hunger and need for Him. When John discovered this, the change was dramatic, and it's a joy to experience his journey with him through his story.
Second, it's an example of how no one can be too far gone, or too far away from God, to find Him. No one is beyond hope of finding salvation and God's purpose for his life. That gives hope to those who are lost, and to those who know someone in need of finding their way to God. John describes many "flames" who helped him leave his self-destructive path, which should encourage all believers to be flames themselves. Any of us could be in the right place and time to help the next John Weaver find his way to the light.
