Book Reviews of A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry, Book 6)

Book Review: READERS NEED TO STOP COMPLAINING AND START APPRECIATING.
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been a fan of Hamilton's for about 12 years now and I have to start this review out by saying to readers: STOP COMPLAINING. If you don't like to read erotic romances, then don't read them. It's that simple. By far the largest complaint across both the Merry Gentry series and the Anita Blake series---- is about the sexual content. I think readers came down harder on the Anita novels because prior to Nacissus in Chains, the sexual content was fairly mild, but if you go back and read some of the earlier novels (the scenes between Richard, Anita, and JC in particular), Hamilton drops hints along the way that eventually Anita will be able to raise power via sex.

Pretty much from the get-go we see that Merry is able to raise energy during sex, such as when she restores her lover Roane Finn back to the selkie he once was in the first book, A Kiss of Shadows. So, five books later it should be no surprise that sex is an integral part of the series. So, why are people still upset over this? Hamilton is unapologetic when it comes to the sexual content of her books, no amount of readers complaining about the sex is going to sway her from writing the story she wants to write. These are her characters--she's going to write them her way. Like Hamilton states on her blog: "Life is too short to read books you don't like" and the fact remains that even with all the readers that claim they will never purchase another one of her books again---Hamilton continues to be a bestselling author.

Hamilton has skillfully executed a very unique idea in the denizens of Faerie living among humans. This is not some half formed concept. The universe is complete with it's own history, and plenty of back story for the characters blended well with the author's own ideas. It's clear that Hamilton has done a lot of research on faerie mythology and it really does lend an element of reality to the series. In a world where it is hard to distinguish one heroine from another, Hamilton really should be applauded on how singular these novels really are.

A Lick of Frost is one of the most sexually tame books of the series, in my opinion. Rhys, Galen, and Abe are accused of the rape of the Seelie Lady Caitrin and the book opens with Merry and her private guard attending a meeting with human authorities to ascertain if the is enough evidence to go to trial. Merry and Co. know that the three sidhe men are innocent of the crime and are trying to figure out how Lady Caitrin and Seelie King Taranis, Lord of Light and Illusion are able to lie about this, as it is well known that the sidhe cannot lie. Merry and her men later come to find out that there are ways of bending the truth without being forsworn.

Critics gripe about Merry not figuring this out sooner, but as a Sidhe Princess who is also mortal, she is not as accomplished in court intrigue and is also more likely to play by the rules and the fact that the Seelie Court, The Golden Court would stoop to lying is a surprise since the Seelie have always claimed to be the good guys.

In the aftermath of an attack on Merry's guards the second half of the book takes place at Maeve Reed's mansion. Merry is having to deal with being able to divide her personal feelings from her duty as a potential queen, tricky negotiations with the Goblins, the ever growing animosity from her Aunt Andais, fear over possible assassination attempts, and the fact that Merry is bringing life back to Faerie will require the sacrifice of someone who she holds very dear.

For those of you that are concerned or merely curious, there are only two sex scenes in the novel which are tame in comparison to the other novels. As far as the torture and sadism goes. Merry only discusses her feelings on BDSM and witnesses the aftermath of Crystall being "at the queen's mercy". If you've read the other novels, this should not be shocking as Andais is a self confessed sadist.

Overall, if you're looking for a good story that will keep you turning the pages, try this one. Just remember, if you are someone who doesn't care to read any type of erotica then this isn't for you.

Summary of A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry, Book 6)

I am Meredith Gentry, princess and heir apparent to the throne in the realm of faerie, onetime private investigator in the mortal world. To be crowned queen, I must first continue the royal bloodline and give birth to an heir of my own. If I fail, my aunt, Queen Andais, will be free to do what she most desires: install her twisted son, Cel, as monarch . . . and kill me.

My royal guards surround me, and my best loved?my Darkness and my Killing Frost?are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts, I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn?t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs.

Now King Taranis, powerful and vainglorious ruler of faerie?s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime?and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis?s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.
