If you're among those who actually consider Spaghetti-O's a major food group, you might actually find A MAN, A CAN, A PLAN useful; that aside, it reeks of what a 1950s housewife might have thrown together to appease the kids on day when she didn't have time to go to the store and opened the cupboard to find it pretty empty.

In theory, the recipes consist of throwing together things you probably have in the kitchen cabinet, giving it a stir, and then heating it through. In practice, it is more complicated than that: while each recipe emphasizes canned this and canned that, they also call for such items as refrigerated pizza dough, shredded low fat mozzarella, ziti, cream cheese, and so on--items the target audience isn't exactly likely to have on hand. No, if you want to whip up "Stuffed Albacore," you're probably gonna have to run down to the store, because the only ingredients you're likely to have on hand are canned tuna and mayonnaise.

That said, the processes involved are actually pretty simple--and Joachim and his editors try to make the whole thing butch enough to appeal to NASCAR dads by using manly words and phrases. This usually seems to involve the word "dump." "Dump in the ham, mushrooms, and potatoes..." "dump the ham, beans, and salsa..." "dump the soup, milk, and garlic powder..." "dump the chicken, beans, and salsa..." and so on. Occasionally they do the same thing with the word "mash" or try for a variation on "nuke." They're also fond of the word "spuds," lest they offend men who consider the word "potatoes" to be effeminate. It's all pretty silly, pretty stupid stuff.

As for the recipes themselves, like I said, this is classic 1950s "Mom, what's for dinner?" stuff--and yes, four of the fifty recipes do indeed involve Spaghetti-0's--and about half of them are what I would describe as snack foods rather than anything that approaches a substantial meal. Here and there you might chuckle, once in a while you might actually find a recipe that has possibilities, but on the whole this is a cook book for people whose idea of good food begins and ends with McDonald's.

'50s-Style Creamed Chicken

How to make it: Cook the onion in the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, until tender. Dump in the chicken and stir. Cook for 1 minute. Stir in the soup and mushrooms. Simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the sour cream over low heat. Heat through and serve over the cooked noodles. Makes 6 servings. Per serving: 354 calories, 5 g fat (12% of calories), 1 g saturated fat, 22 g protein, 54 g carbohydrates, 5 g fiber, 599 mg sodium. When it's not just you and the TV ... top with chopped fresh parsley.

10-oz can chunk chicken breast, drained and flaked
11-oz can reduced-fat cream of mushroom soup
6-oz can sliced mushrooms, drained
12-oz bag "no yolk" egg noodles, cooked according to the package directions
Also: 1/2 cup chopped onion, 2 tsp olive oil, 1 cup fat-free sour cream
