Book Reviews of A Man on the Moon

Book Review: I was there
Summary: 5 Stars

Chaikan made me feel like I was right there with the astronauts, from the violence of liftoff to the exhilaration of touchdown on the lunar surface. If you are interested in what went on behind the scenes of the Apollo missions, get this book.

Book Review: Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Mr. Chaikin has written the best book yet on the unique adventure that was Apollo. Instead of techno-babble we get the human side, the internecine politics, the cutthroat competition. I've read it several times over and have come to see qualities in the Apollo astronauts that went beyond the "roger a-ok we're go". It's interesting that only now, over thirty years since the last great voyage to the moon, is the American public beginning to understand how truly special the Apollo program was. America is beginning to see the 1960's as more than just Vietnam and hippies. Apollo has returned to the mantlepiece of Amercian history and Mr. Chaikin's book has helped put it there.

Book Review: Best Book I've Read about the Apollo Program
Summary: 5 Stars

This book amazed me with its detail. I've read many books about the Apollo program, but none gave me the sense of the personalilties involved as much as this book did. Details are here that you will never see in ordinary newspaper articles or school textbooks. A great read - it really was hard to put down. Also, this book is a one-of-a-kind now because some of the astronauts Chaikin interviewed have since passed away. I also recommend watching the Tom Hank's produced mini-series based on this book.

Book Review: If you could have only one book about the Apollo missions...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is it. Man on the Moon is an indepth read of all the Apollo missions, and the numerous individuals involved in fulfilling President Kennedy's desire to land a man on the moon and return him safely to Earth before 1970. Man on the Moon influenced, to a large extent, the HBO mini series "From the Earth to the Moon", which is my opinion, one of the best pieces of television ever made.

All the Apollo missions are covered, beginning with the illfated Apollo 1, when Grissom, White and Chaffee died of asphyixation, to Apollo 7 (the first manned mission after Apollo 1), to the last mission Apollo 17, when Cernan and Schmitt were the last men to walk on the moon. Some missions naturally have more attention focussed on them; Apollo 8, Apollo 11, and Apollo 13. Despite this, Chaikin still devotes much time to the other missions, and the circumstances surrounding them.

Chaikin has a particularly easy reading style, which given the technical backdrop for the book, is impressive. He introduces the reader to all the major players, Astronauts, Engineers, and Officials of NASA, all brought vividly to life. He provides plenty of ancedotes in his discussions of each particular mission, making for entertaining reading. If you want to know about the manned Apollo missions, get this book. You won't regret it.

Book Review: I wish this site gave 10 Stars. Great read never put it down
Summary: 5 Stars

Great read awesome book about all the Apollo missions even up to the very last mission Apollo 17. Chalkin gave some very great detail felt like you were actually their on the moon with the astronauts themselves. It felt like I was their throught the mission on the Apollo ship even on to the lunar lander. I just got done listening to the audio book of this story. Still I like reading this book it fells like your their. Then they turn this book into a mini series on HBO well I did not have HBO at the time but my mom brought it for my birthday present and I watched as actors, directors, and even producers relive the Apollo story told by the greatest actor of all time Tom Hanks. This is a real page turner starting out with the infamous fire on Pad 34 to the amazing Christmas time Lunar orbit flight to the First landing on the moon made by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the harrowing Apollo 13 flight to the final dance in the lunar landing flights made by Eugene Cernan and Harrison "Jack" Schmitt. This by far exceeds what a closet astronaut would read I wish I could of lived it in the 1960s but I was not born back then but I am engrossed in it now. But if you want to pick up more books by different authors pick them up here at [Amazon.com] or go to Borders they have a great selection of books on the flight in space. Enjoy this book it is a page turner.
