Book Review: Good in its field, pity it doesn't stay there
Summary: 3 Stars
I wound up reading this book because it was reasonably well-recommended as a nutritional guide for pregnancy and post-partum, and I am reasonably concerned about my risk factors for post-partum depression.
It would have been a much better book had it stuck to that: reasonably thorough scientific information about what nutrients are required for which processes, how to get them, regular stories about the sorts of concerns that can be treated by this methodology.
However, the snide attitude it took early on to psychiatric medication was more than a little offputting; while many issues with depression and other mental health concerns can be alleviated with nutrition, in some cases medication is warranted. I additionally wrote off the enthusiasm with which the authors would include weight loss as a positive side effect of their programs -- up until they suggested that "the appropriate weight for your height" was "often what you weighed in high school, assuming you were a relatively thin teenager". The age of the hummingbird metabolism and underdeveloped pelvic girdle is not a sensible weight aspiration for a pregnant or post-partum woman, for Christ's sake! (I verge on underweight for my height and build - if I lose a few pounds I notice from the bruising - and I still weigh more than twenty pounds over my stable point in high school.)
At that point, I returned the book to the library. Whatever value it might have in its scientific data was completely ruined by its dangerous medical advice.
