Book Reviews of A New IBS SolutionBook Review: Try the Antibotics - they may or may not work Summary: 4 Stars
I have had symptoms of constipation and bloating. Then about every 4 weeks or so, I come down with horrific nausea (no vomiting). I do have gastroparesis and Dr. thought I might have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth sooo, I bought this book and asked my Dr. for the Xifaxan 550 mg/3 times a day for 14 days followed by erthromycin. All the symptoms went away for 4 to 5 months so I thought good, I'll just get the antibiotics again. The second time they did nothing! Then I struggle for many more months and read in Pimentel's book that sometimes adding 500 mg neomycin 3 times a day for 14 days to the Xifaxen regiment might work. It did! For eight glorious months and I didn't follow his diet - just ate normally. Now, it's back again. So, I'm on my fourth dose of Xifaxan and neomycin - I WILL follow his diet this time to see if that is the missing factor to a grand CURE! But, really, I'd like people who gushed about this book months ago to come back and update how their symptoms are doing now! I haven't talked to anyone with SIBO who hasn't have this come back. Most only make it weeks or 3 or 4 months. Get the book but keep your expectations reasonable.
Book Review: Must Read! Only IBS Book that discusses SIBO in Detail Summary: 5 Stars
Having suffered from IBS for over 25 Years and having read dozens of other Books on the Topic it was such a pleasure to read Dr. Mark Pimentel's new Book, "A New IBS Solution".
What impressed me the most was that he understands that "IBS" is just a catch-all name that is given when all other "Tests" prove normal. He believes that the "Root Cause" of IBS isn't caused by "Stress" but by an Overgrowth of Bacteria in the Small Intestines( SIBO). This may account for up to 80% of all the people suffering from "IBS"
A New IBS Solution,is without doubt the most comprehensive Book available today that discusses SIBO, how to diagnose it, dietary factors for SIBO and most importantly how to treat it. The name of his Protocol is called, The Cedars-Sinai Medical Protocol. Which is one of the most respected Hospitals in the World!
For anyone who's tired of having "IBS" My advice would be to take a copy of Dr. Pimentel's Book to your Physician and ask him to take a few minutes during his lunch hour to read it!
In 7-10 Days after starting his protocol you may actually start to feel normal again!
Book Review: Be sure to know the cause before using this treatment Summary: 3 Stars
My Specialist prescribed the medical tratment metioned in this book based on his positive experience with other patients. Unfortunately I got much worse to the point where pain prevented me from sleeping. My problem was as a result of one dose of the strong antibiotic zithromax and it seems that my experience is in agreement with the other reviewer that you should not use this if your problem is caused by antibiotics. It took me several weeks to recover and get back to the situation I was in before taking this medicine.
I am giving the book 3 stars because it does work for some , mainly those whose IBS was caused by problems other than taking antibiotics . This is based on the results obtained by the specialist I went to.
For those struggling with IBS and a last resort I recommend reading an article in the journal of "practical Gastroentorology" August 2007 entitled " Clinical ramifications of malabsorption of fructose and other short chain Carbohydrates" where they postulate that some IBS may be caused by inability to absorb excess fructose and short chain carbohydrates. I had better results with this approach
Book Review: An expensive treatment. Summary: 3 Stars
I've been treated according to the protocol in this book. Every reader should be aware of the extreme cost of the testing and treatments. The breath test at Cedars Sinai is $850. Xifaxan costs $1,000. Yes, I have insurance, but am still going to pay 30% myself. I was desperate as many of you reading this book will be for a solution. My suggestion is to try natural remedies first if you don't have the resources (i.e. about $2,000+ for clearing up your IBS or SIBO). Try a no carb diet for a couple of weeks to "starve" the bacteria (as was suggested by another health practitioner) and natural antibiotics such as grapefruit seed extract, coconut oil, colloidal silver etc. (just google sibo and natural cure etc.) plus possibly parasite herbs (green hulls of black walnut, clove, wormwood, etc.). I did get some relief from these things before caving and going the traditional route. I believe these folks mean well, but can't help but also think that they may be cashing in on this expensive disease by being a spokesperson for Salix and Cedars. I guess that's their prerogative when they have discovered the only cure in town.
Book Review: This book actually makes sense! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had IBS-C for almost 20 years. I have been to 4 GI doctors, tried every natural alternative I could think of and have had little relief. This is the first book I bought (and I've bought many) that really made sense to me. This book explains why fiber actually makes things worse for me and why something like diet soda really makes me feel awful. I took this book to my primary care doctor and he all but laughed in my face but I demanded he help me try the protocol explained in this book. I tried it and started feeling so much better. I never did buy that IBS was caused only by stress. I'm sure it makes it worse but it does not CAUSE it. I wished I could find a doctor in my city that was a little more open minded about this so I didn't have to fight to get this treatment. I hope this book helps you as much as it has helped me.
