Book Reviews of A Platter of Figs and Other RecipesBook Review: For the cook who has everything Summary: 5 Stars
To set the stage, I have many cookbooks and do quite a bit of cooking. I cook daily with some thought and creativity because I have the time. I enjoy special occasion and I have a family that cooks. I look regularly through my cookbooks.
When I saw this book, I had to buy it, not just look at it once at the library. It is beautiful and inspiring. The text around the recipes is informative and as beautiful as the photography. The approach to food is creative yet not trendy. This is a book for serious cooks who value the way food builds the culture around us, and it is fun!
Book Review: look before buying Summary: 5 Stars
Given that this is a cookbook - the best thing to do would be go to the local bookstore and take fifteen minutes flipping through it to get a flavor of the types of meals that are offered. I thought it was a very unique cookbook and very different from other selections that are available. If you were as impressed as I was head back home and order from amazon.
I thought it could have used more pictures and instructions. This is more of a book about cooking than a book with recipes. I enjoyed reading all the extra information as much as I have making the meals.
Book Review: Great, unpretentious book Summary: 5 Stars
I was given this book for Christmas by my family and I must say it is a pleasure to read and I love the way the menus are arranged seasonally. I like to cook seasonally and with local ingredient as much as possible and to keep food as close as possible to its natural state. It is easy to read and his recipes are low fuss. I really enjoy this book and look forward to trying the recipes. I have already seen in the book some pointers I can use in my overall cooking and I love the narrative and explanation that goes along with every menu. Great!!!
Book Review: Two unsuccessful recipes Summary: 2 Stars
I cook a lot and have found some wonderful recipes that I use, but so far this cookbook has failed me twice. I made the spinach pie twice and both times it was watery and unflavorful (and I use the best of ingredients, like organic everything). The second recipe was the Cherry and Almond Clafoutis. It was way too sweet and did not make a enticing presentation in the cast iron skillet I used. I am hesitant to try anymore of the recipes.
Book Review: More than Cooking Summary: 5 Stars
Food is more than just fuel and a cookbook is more than just recipes. Tanis reminds the reader of the enjoyment of sharing a meal and the social opportunity of preparation. We share the flavor of memories in his writing. Arranging the menus by season makes the book useful all year and the pictures are as enticing as they are beautiful. Directions are clear and results satisfying. I hope that he writes more books.
