Book Reviews of A Privileged Life: Celebrating Wasp Style

Book Review: A PrivileUged Life: Celebrating Wasp Style
Summary: 5 Stars

Up until about a year ago I never thought of myself as having anything to do with Wasp style. I grew up in a mixed neighborhood on Long Island, comprised of both lower middle class, and upper middle class working families. My parents were two hard working people who grew up during the depression with little education to their credit because they were both sent out to work at a very young age to assist with their family finances. I thought Wasp style was something akin to the lifestyle of a character right out of a Fitzgerald novel. And since I married a Jew, for whatever reason, our life leaned more towards the lifestyle of a Jewish family rather than a Christian one during the early years of our marriage. Interestingly, it wasn't until the end of last summer when I picked up a copy of A Privileged Life that I realized how much of this quirky style pertained to me. Even though the traditions, and way of life of the New England prep school where our sons spent their high school years was closely related to the homestyle precepts of my own childhood, I saw it more as a life of privilege, and not one that could ever be related to mine. That said, reading Suzanna Salk's book was like an epiphany, it brought back so many fond memories of my childhood on Long Island, and though my family could not afford to summer in New Hampshire, or, go to the Vineyard, the photographs, and descriptions of family life reminded me of home. I thought about flounder fishing with my parents in a small row boat on Setauket sound where the scent of Skol mixed with the smell of freshly caught fish stowed in the old canvas bag that my father kept for fishing. He had a grand old set of fishing gear that he cherished for most of his adult life and was quite a pro at bringing in the fish. We spent many seasons fishing in one row boat, or, another. I remember how they drank coffee from an old metal thermos and how we ate salmi and cheese sandwiches on white bread with mayonaise. Later, they dug for clams at low tide and I sat on the rocks nearby in my red tennis sneakers. Since I was a bit of a Tom boy, I always had a beige zip up jacket for the fall and spring, so that I could run and climb poles and trees with ease, and there was always a new spring coat for church every Easter. And even though we didn't own a boat, our life revolved around the nearby harbor, watching the seasons change with the incoming fishing boats, and long walks on the town beaches in winter, and me, sitting on the rocky beach eating tuna fish sandwiches with my friends during summer. What more can I can say.... except thanks Susanna for enabling me to walk down memory lane.

Summary of A Privileged Life: Celebrating Wasp Style

At once glamorous and mysterious, the WASP lifestyle has influenced countless trends in the worlds of fashion, home design, and pop culture. Today, one no longer has to be a WASP to embrace its casual-yet-elegant attitude and sense of style. With lively text and over one hundred images from world-renowned photographers, A Privileged Life: Celebrating WASP Style is the first book of its kind to unveil this rarefied way of life, one that many emulate though few truly understand.

From the eclectic and well-decorated home of Sister Parish to the popular pink-and-green color combination of preppy chic to iconic photographs of the style makers who embody the WASP spirit like Grace Kelly, Truman Capote, or Jacqueline Kennedy, this book celebrates our timeless fascination with America's leisure class.
