Book Reviews of A Simple PlanBook Review: Just Say No ~ It's That Simple Summary: 1 Stars
I was looking forward to reading this book as the plot sounded really interesting. I managed to slog through one unredeeming chapter after another before finally finishing it. The plot was so absurd as to be laughable. The "twist" at the end was predictable from the very first chapters. And honestly, Hank and Sarah deserved everything they got in the end. The only sympathetic characters were the dog and the baby who, along with most every other character in the book, ended up in Hank's orbit of destruction. I actually thought about throwing the book away after finishing it but will donate it to a cancer charity bookstore. Hopefully, they will get a dollar for it which will be the only thing that will help save this from being a complete waste of time and energy.
Book Review: The Devil's Gift Summary: 5 Stars
Your "helpful" votes are appreciated. A short review that leads the read to a great novel can still be a good review. Thanks.
Don't start reading this novel. You'll be up all night. A man, his brother, and the brother's friend, stumble onto the wreck of a small plane, and inside, they find 4.5 million dollars in cash. So what to do with the money? They decide to keep it, of course, making a bargain that the one brother will hold it for six months.
I really don't want to say anymore about the plot. It goes red (as in blood) from that day. A "Simple Plan" turns out to be far from simple. Well, that's all I'll say. I don't want to spoil this fast-paced novel. Five stars!
PS: I heard that the movie version is the pits.
Book Review: Unforgetable Summary: 5 Stars
I read primarily non-fiction and fiction only now and then. I don't recall how I ran across this book. I think I found it as set dressing on a movie set, and I know I never paid for it. This is a book I will NEVER forget. I really can't imagine how anyone could have concocted such a bizare, grotesque, and intricate plot. And on top of that it's exquisitely written. You could call it a murder mystery, a horror story, a thriller, or a mood piece set under a frozen overcast sky where it always seems to be winter. I believe it's more than all that, and I would call it literature disguised as a mass market junk book. The movie was OK, but there's really no way you can compress this book into a feature length film.
Book Review: The movie is better than the book Summary: 2 Stars
Wow. I never thought I'd say that. I love the movie so I thought for sure I'd love the book. Wrong. It's hard to enjoy a novel when you HATE the main character. Obviously I knew this didn't have likeable characters or a happy ending, but the book takes it too far. I will not give away the plot but I will say the book is much more violent than the movie, and the descriptions are so detailed that I cringed in some parts. I am giving this book 2 stars only because Scott Smith is an excellent writer, and the story he created here is amazing, but I believe that it is too violent, unnecessarily so. If you like books that describe death in bloody detail (both human and family pets) then this book is for you.
Book Review: A Powerful Parable on Greed Summary: 5 Stars
I can't imagine a more powerful warning regarding the destructive power of greed. Many of us have probably dreamed of finding a large amount of money that leaves no clue of who it might have belonged to. We fantasize about suddenly becoming financially independent and what we could do with all that money. Well, be careful what you wish for. Given the innate greed and grabbiness of the human heart, sudden riches often has a less than satisfactory result in human lives. You will become increasingly tense as you read this book and try not to get your heart set on a happily ever after ending. You will find it hard to set the book down so try to read it over a weekend when you have lots of spare time.
