Book Reviews of ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life

Book Review: It all makes sense now!!
Summary: 5 Stars

As far as organizational books are concerned, this was my first purchase of this type. I have been trying to use regular organization books for years and I just couldn't get anything under control. It always seemed that the books expected me to be more organized to begin where they started. My messes were much deeper than they described as the starting point. I was beginning to feel like there was no hope for me to get anything put away and keep it that way. Until I found this book on accident. This book understands that I live under a pile of papers and miscellaneous junk that, once Ive put it away it will find its way back out in the same spot only to end up with the same mess. The ideas are easy and doable for anyone who just wants to keep things simple. Add-ers need simple, colorful, accessible ways to prioritize, organize and file everything. It will make you feel like someone understands the struggle you live with and help you find a way to accomplish what seems so simple to the average person to do, but feels like moving day for us.

Book Review: The best organizing book I've found for those of us with ADD
Summary: 5 Stars

For most of my life, I have known that I don't quite organize my things or thoughts etcetera like most people and all of the "Get your life organized" or traditional methods detailed in organizational books never seemed to help me.

Then, perhaps a year ago, I picked up this book and what a transformation. Even the structure of the book is to capitalize on the attention span of those with ADD as each chapter is broken up into short pieces to make its point and then move on to the next one.

Like anyone with ADD, I find that while doing some of the work on my own has been helpful, I definitely need to follow up with some of the "other support people" that the book describes. I might carry through one day or even for a string of days, but can quickly slip back into old, inefficient patterns (that often have been habit forming over a lifetime of being disorganized).

I find that this book is very positive and makes you feel like having ADD can be a strength rather than a weakness.

I hope you find it helpful.

Book Review: THIS BOOK SAVED MY LIFE!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am an adult diagnosed with A.D.D. much later in life (59). I was aware of my symptoms, but didn't realize they had a name -- and I was able to keep them under control by creating my own coping skills.

While searching online for another book recommended by my therapist (Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder), I discovered this one. Stress had caused my A.D.D. symptoms to go completely berserk and my coping skills no longer worked. This book saved my life.

I was overwhelmed and the clutter was becoming out of control. This book (written in the perfect format for one with A.D.D.) describes the symptoms/problem, tells you why normally suggested organization tools do not work for one with A.D.D., and suggests what you can do instead. It made SO much sense -- and helped me to understand why I do what I do.

I would recommend this book to anyone with A.D.D regardless of age -- it will help with children and young adults too.

Book Review: Very Practical
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this book at the library, but decided that 4 weeks wasn't long enough to keep it. After reading the first paragraph I felt as if the authors knew me very well. They understand the ADD brain and the reasons standard organizational methods don't work. Working with ADD characteristics rather than against them in the organizing process and maintenance of organization is emphasized. I appreciate the insights and tips in each chapter that allow the reader to begin taking action immediately rather than having to read through many chapters describing the difficulties of ADD before getting to "how to" chapters at the end. I usually lose interest and don't finish reading books written in the latter style just like I do with getting organized. I just ordered my own copy so I can read and apply the information on my time schedule rather than hurrying through so I can get the book back for the next person on the waiting list. For me, this looks like the best book I've found to help me live effectively with ADD.

Book Review: These people know how ADD brains work
Summary: 4 Stars

This book addresses the challenges that adults with ADD face every single Day. There is a section in each chapter called: Is this your history? It is if you:
1. Find that forgetfulness and lack of planning add to your daily stress;
2. Resort to making an impulsive decision just to get it over with;
3. Allow people or circumstances decide for you;
4. Let escape activities interfere with your responsibilities;
5. Tend to hyperfocus and lose track of time;
6. Live in crises, reacting to circumstances;
7. Thinks that everything is a "A" in your priority list;
8. Rarely step back to consider what really matters;
9. Have difficult to remember and follow future tasks;
10. Has a cluttered house, bedroom, or office.
You will find yourself in the stories related in this book and will find solutions for your problems. I did not give five stars because I do not agree with some "Level Three Solutions-Help from Professionals", but the book is good.
