Book Review: Inventer of LINCOLN penny and 5$ bill gets needed BIO
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
There's a huge gap in the availability of information on Abraham Lincoln. For most Americans, we either know he's the CIVIL WAR president, freed the slaves, and went on to be shot, or we induce he invented the Penny and the Five dollar bill. For those of us who don't have the time or the patience to read a 1000 page book detailing more info about Abe's life than you know about your best friend, and those who might find the Wikipedia information a little too lacking, McPherson's book is the PERFECT solution. It's small, only about 65 pages, but within those pages, is much more than an outline. During the 2-3 hours it takes to read, you will discover more information on the best example of a USA president, than you would have ever thought possible in a book that size. This biography gives the facts, but in a manner that keeps them readable, interesting, even shocking at times. For instance, when Lincoln ran for reelection for the Senate seat in 1858, he ran against Stephen Douglas, the former fiancee of Mary Todd, Abe's mentally unstable wife. History is filled filled with the constant reminders, that historical personages are first and formost, human beings.

For those who know nothing about the Civil War, theres enough about how Abe responded as the slavery issue developed, and the Confederate states ceded from the Union, to show the amazing leadership, wisdom, and scholarship of Lincoln. Throughout his life, when Abe wanted to learn something, he borrowed books, studied, and gave himself the education he couldnt afford. He never went to college, or Law school. Nevertheless he took the bar exam and passed. When the Civil war broke out, he studied books about the classic war tactics of Roman Generals, so he COULD be an effective COMMANDER IN CHIEF, pushing his Generals on to victories, and when they were incapable, replacing them. Again, this is a man that was never in the armed forces, yet wanted to be able to direct this war between the states, without major plunders that would have cost much more American blood, than what was already shed. Over and over, facts are revealed, qualities of a man displayed, and intellectual abilities shown, that point to the perfect example of a segacious, humane, and honest human being. Simutaneously, here was a man given to deep depression at times, and who thru in the towel for politics, when he lost to Douglas for the senate race of 1858. But he came back from defeat, and eventually won election. Lincoln restored the Union, and with it, the future of the United States. Yet far from being remembered as the president who was not able to keep the slave states in line, and caused the bloodiest war in our history, he risked EVERYTHING, to keep the states united. Had he not made those decisions, we would never have become the world power that we eventually did. The bravery of his actions, the intelligence of his methods, and the intuitive nature of his wisdom about the value of HUMANITY, (mixed with humor, and strenght of character), make this man a great example for anybody, anywhere, American or not, politically interested or not. He's on our pennies and five dollar bills for an important reason...he was our best president, in our most trying of times.

History is circular, and it seems that once again, our nation is horribly divided, ironically, once more between North and South. Slavery is once more the issue, tho its a slavery based on your wages, and not the color of your skin. With our first black president, who we all hope will have SOME of Lincoln's abilities, or at least knows enough to mimic them, the time has come to have a passing knowledge about WHAT those abilities are. The USA has fallen into a time, where good presidents and politicians are quite rare. After what is arguablely our worst president in history, we urgently NEED to be reminded as a nation, that we DO have an honorable past, when we were lead out of much worse messes than what we are in right now, by politicians who were intelligent, wise, strong, and compassionate. If ever we needed a yardstick to measure what our presidency SHOULD BE, it is now. I recommend this book as that yardstick, for it gives the facts, without an indepth account of every fact known to history, about the man and his times. Sometimes, a short book will present everything you need to know, without getting lost in the details. The language is geared for the general reader, High School age and above. So if you need a book for 10 year old children interested in presidents, this books not appropiate. But for EVERYBODY else, a better short american book about a better TALL American president, would be hard to find.

Summary of Abraham Lincoln

Best-selling author James M. McPherson follows the son of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks from his early years in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois, to his highly successful law career, his marriage to Mary Todd, and his one term in Congress. We witness his leadership of the Republican anti-slavery movement, his famous debates with Stephen A. Douglas (a long acquaintance and former rival for the hand of Mary Todd), and his emergence as a candidate for president in 1860. Following Lincoln's election to the presidency, McPherson describes his masterful role as Commander in Chief during the Civil War, the writing of the Emancipation Proclamation, and his assassination by John Wilkes Booth. The book also discusses his lasting legacy and why he remains a quintessential American hero two hundred years after his birth, while an annotated bibliography permits easy access to further scholarship. With his ideal short account of Lincoln, McPherson provides a compelling biography of a man of humble origins who preserved our nation during its greatest catastrophe and ended the scourge of slavery.
Marking the two-hundredth anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this marvelous short biography by a leading historian offers an illuminating portrait of one of the giants in the American story. It is the best concise introduction to Lincoln in print, a must-have volume for anyone interested in American history or in our greatest president. In the discussion below, noted historian and author of Lincoln and His Admirals, Craig L. Symonds, talks to James M. McPherson about Lincoln's relationships with his generals, beginning with the controversial commander of the northern army, George McClellan, whose soldiers referred to him as the "the young Napoleon." Both historians share the prestigious 2009 Lincoln Prize for the year's best books on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. McPherson's Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief and Symonds's Lincoln and His Admirals were the winning books.

A Conversation Between Two Lincoln Historians: James M. McPherson and Craig L. Symonds

Symonds: George McClellan is clearly a central character in this story. In your view, was Lincoln too patient with Little Mac, not patient enough, or just about right? Would the Lincoln of 1864 have tolerated McClellan as long as the Lincoln of 1862 did?

McPherson: In one sense, he was too patient. McClellan deserved to be fired after his failure to reinforce [General] Pope at Second Bull Run, as a majority of the Cabinet wanted Lincoln to do. But in another sense, Lincoln was absolutely right that only McClellan could reorganize the army and restore its morale, and if the president had fired him then, the army might have broken down. In the end, Lincoln's timing on removing Mac from command--just after the fall elections in 1862--was just right.

Symonds: What about the so-called political generals: did Lincoln appoint and tolerate them out of perceived political necessity or because he believed that some of them, at least, had genuine merit? And, for that matter, did any of them have genuine merit?

McPherson: Lincoln appointed the political generals in order to mobilize their constituencies for the war effort. Northern mobilization for the war in 1861-62 was a from-the-bottom-up process, with important local and state political leaders playing a key part in persuading men to enlist in this all-volunteer army, and political generals were a key part in this process, which increased an army of 16,000 men in April 1861 to an army of 637,000 men in April 1862. And while we are all familiar with the military incompetents among the political generals, some of them were actually pretty good--John Logan and Frank Blair, for example.

Symonds: Why did Lincoln put up with [his chief war advisor] Henry Halleck?

McPherson: Lincoln used Halleck to translate presidential orders and wishes into language that military commanders could understand, and to translate their reports and requests and explanations into language that Lincoln understood. That was what Lincoln meant when he called Halleck a "first-rate clerk." Of course he had wanted him to be more than a clerk, and that is why Lincoln finally appointed Grant as General in Chief and booted Halleck upstairs into the new office of "chief of staff," where his clerkly qualities were needed.

Symonds: Lincoln was clearly relieved to turn over military operations to Grant in 1864, but did he also fear Grant as a potential political rival?

McPherson: He had been concerned about Grant as a potential political rival, until Grant let it be known throughout intermediaries that he unequivocally and absolutely had no political ambitions in 1864 and strongly supported Lincoln's reelection. After that, Lincoln had no more concerns.

Symonds: Now that you will be the owner of two busts of Lincoln by Augustus St. Gaudens, along with your many other prizes, isn't your house getting pretty full?

McPherson: There is still room in the house, but since my grandchildren are interested in Mr. Lincoln in bronze, I may deposit this bust in their house, where I can visit it whenever I want (they live ten miles away). Read more
