Book Reviews of Advanced Marathoning - 2nd Edition

Book Review: Achieve Your Marathon Performance.
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard good things about this book from other runners and how it helped them break through to the next level in marathoning and so I decided to give it a try. After following one of the training programs of this book, I'd have to say that this certainly is a great book. It offers good sound advice on training. It's got marathon training schedules for all levels of runners. Since the schedules are laid out for you, it removes the guess work on what kind of training or how much mileage to do. This was particularly helpful during the taper. In the past I would always taper on what I thought was right, but I was always a little unsure if I was doing too much or not enough. With this book, it's all there for you. Just follow the schedules. With the help of this book I was able to achieve run a 2:45 PR during the 2010 New York City Marathon. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: Run Your Fastest Marathon
Summary: 5 Stars

When I initially received this book I was a little skeptical I would learn new information since I own the first edition of Advanced Marathoning. After thoroughly reading the book from cover to cover, I was amazed the great deal of novel exercise theory I gained. Nearly every sentence contains a valuable training nugget. Readers learn all there is to know about how to run their best marathon through science, experience and training theory. Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas do a dazzling job of explaining the science and application to runners of all abilities. Photos of running- specific exercises, drills, core and flexibility training are extremely useful.
In my opinion, Advanced Marathoning is an obligatory book for every runner who wants to become the fastest runner they can be and ultimately find out their true potential.

Book Review: So Far, The Best I've Read on Marathoning
Summary: 5 Stars

I have 5 -6 books on the subject of marathoning. Advanced Marathoning is by far the best. For me the book was engaging right from the start. It dismisses a number of myths about running presenting the science and physiology of running in a very understandable way. I found myself jumping around the various chapters exploring relevant information concerning diet, recovery, as well as planning workout schedules. It has inspired me to do better. This book will be my reference tool to BQ this year. As a slower marathoner, I now believe I can attain much faster times. I will put it to the test this fall with a goal to run a 3:45. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for well written text on training and running a marathon.

Book Review: Paul Pfitzinger's "Advanced Marathoning"
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is exactly what the title says - for "Advanced Marathoning". While the other books tell you how to complete a marathon, this book tells you everything you need to know on how to race a marathon and to help you get a PR in your next marathon. Since I have read and started following the advanced schedules in this book, fine tuning my training as I went along, I have had several PR's. Over the course of one year and three marathons, my PR has jumped thirteen minutes. It has gone from a 3:13 a year ago to a 3:00 and I honestly hope to run a sub three in my next marathon. This is the best book, I have ever read about marathon training and would highly recommend that anyone who is serious about the marathon, buy it!

Book Review: Answered some questions I had....
Summary: 5 Stars

Am very happy with this book... I also have the Running Formula book from Daniel's and this incorporates that info but tailors it to the 26.2 distance. Reading the Daniel's book I was left wondering why long runs aren't done at M pace. The Advanced Marathoning book explains that while the M pace is relatively relaxed it will stress the body beyond the appropriate level (and hence will take too long to recover properly when you're running 6X a week) so only a portion (no more than 14M) of your long run should be at M pace.

Also had a great section on race strategy. If you're looking to attain a certain time instead of just surviving the marathon, this is the #1 book you should have on your shelf.
