Book Reviews of Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and ManagementBook Review: Excellent Professional and Academic Reference Summary: 5 Stars
Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management (Haestad Methods, 2003), is a well-written text that provides an excellent introduction to water distribution modeling. The text (1) introduces the reader to fundamental WDM theory, (2) good modeling practice, and (3) state-of-the-art modeling technologies such as optimization, GIS and water system security. The authors review the fundamental theory and engineering principles of WDM such that a practicing engineer can use this reference to develop an understanding of WDM technology within the context of their undergraduate education. Illustrations within chapters and problems at the end of chapters are very instructive. For the professional engineer this text does an excellent job of helping to remove the mystery of water distribution modeling software. As a professor of civil engineering, I find this to be a valuable text and/or reference for our senior design courses. Computational simulation (modeling) is used in many areas of civil engineering. The fundamental modeling skills introduced in AWDMM can be used by students as a guide to good modeling practice in any application area. It is always difficult to strike the appropriate balance between instruction in fundamental theory and software application when using commercial software in design courses. The format of this text provides an excellent template for such instruction. In our curriculum, students have had instruction in WDM theory prior to their design courses and AWDMM provides an adequate review without belaboring the points while extending their knowledge base by introducing modeling concepts and WDM operational characteristics. Overall, this is an excellent reference for both the practicing engineer and academic instruction.
Summary of Advanced Water Distribution Modeling and ManagementAdvanced Water Distribution Modeling and Management builds on Haestad Press? best-selling Water Distribution Modeling book. Addressing the modeling process from data collection to application, Advanced Water Distribution Modeling & Management includes all the material from the best-selling Water Distribution Modeling book plus many additional topics. The new 800+ page release from Haestad Press adds extensive material from an international team of experts from both academia and consulting firms and includes topics such as: In-depth coverage of optimization techniques for model calibration, system design, and pump operations. Advanced water quality modeling topics including tank mixing, water quality solution algorithms, sampling techniques, tracer studies, tank design, and maintenance of adequate disinfectant residuals. Integration of SCADA systems with water distribution modeling for estimating model demands, initial conditions, and control settings; forecasting system operations; calibrating extended-period simulation models; streamlining water quality analysis; and estimating water loss during a main break. The essentials of transient analysis including the causes and sources of transients, as well as the potential effects of transients on water distribution systems. Application of GIS technology for skeletonization, demand allocation, and pipe break analysis; discussion of the technological issues that arise when integrating GIS and water distribution modeling; and the current state of the technology. Use of models to assess water system vulnerability and security, respond to emergencies in real-time, simulate contamination events, prioritize physical security improvements, and unravel past contamination events.
