Book Reviews of Al Capone Does My ShirtsBook Review: Fitting In Can be Murder Summary: 5 Stars
Moose Flanagan has just moved to Alcatraz. His father has gotten a job as an electrician at the most notorious prison in the United States. You would think Moose would be excited, but he isn't. Instead, Moose must watch over his autistic sister, Natalie, while trying to avoid the warden's scheming daughter, Piper.
Moose's problems multiply when he catches Natalie holding hands with Prisoner 105. Is Natalie safe on the island? Who is Prisoner 105? Moose enlists the help of the notorious Al Capone in an attempt to keep Natalie in school and off the island.
This is one of the best examples of juvenile fiction I have read in a long time. I am always on the lookout for books that will catch the attention of `reluctant readers,' and this book does just that. The character of Moose is a typical preteen boy - his feelings for his family conflict with his own growing interests. He must choose what is important to him - baseball or Natalie. Ultimately, he make the wise decision and cares for the sister he loves.
Although fiction, the novel has a basis in reality - guards and their families did live on Alcatraz Island, Al Capone did work in the prison laundry, and civilians did interact with some prisoners. Choldenko has included this and other information in the `Author's Note' at the end of the book. This section sheds some light on `life on the rock' and is a great link between the historical information and the novel itself.
This novel will capture your child's imagination. I highly recommend it.

In this crazy fast paced action book a twelve-year-old boy named Moose Flanagan has just moved to Alcatraz Island with his not so perfect sister, Natalie. The family moved because the father has taken a job as a prison guard and electrician. During Moose's time on Alcatraz he comes across a danger-loving girl named Piper, she is the warden's daughter, a relationship he doesn't want involving a convict and many other humorous adventures.
This book has won the Newberry Honor Book Award. The second book in this series is "Al Capone Shines My Shoes". Gennifer Choldenko used primary resources make the book as realistic as possible.
action books to me seem more interesting Capone Does My Shirts, you never really see a book
I enjoyed this book because it was filled with action and. It was filled with suspense with every page you turned. This book instantly grabbed me because of it's cover, I mean like when it said Al for kids that would actually talk the famous gangster from Chicago .
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Alcatraz, the 1930's and adventures. I hope after reading this book you will enjoy it as much as I did. Make sure you pick up the second book, "Al Capone Shines My Shoes" to find out the next adventures of Moose and his friends.
Book Review: A Teacher's Perspective Summary: 5 Stars
Al Capone Does my Shirts is a Newbery Honor book that fits into the Historical Fiction genre because it is set in 1935 and is true to that time period. It all begins when a family moves to Alcatraz Island for work. The main character, a young boy called Moose, struggles with the realities of coping with an older sister who is autistic.
This story was captivating! From the first chapter I was hooked. The setting and situation are believable, yet unexpected. I'd never considered that guards' families had to live on the island with the infamous prisoners. In fact, after reading the author's notes at the end of the book, I spoke with a woman who'd experienced living on Alcatraz as a young child...she reported that the book was very accurate.
Natalie's autism adds another element to the tale and allows young readers a window into the realities of siblings with special needs. In the classroom, this book could be an introduction to a study of Alcatraz Island and the history of the institution there as well as its current condition. Alternately, it could be paired with other books with themes of sibling relationships or special needs family members. Fiction provides a wonderful vehicle for students to explore the realities of living with special needs and to develop empathy in this area.
In short, I would highly recommend this book...in fact I have!
Book Review: Patrick B. - Al Capone Does My Shirts Summary: 5 Stars
Al Capone Does My Shirts was very informative to me yet it still managed to entertain me. Throughout the whole entire story it explains to you who Al Capone is and what he did. Yet the story still managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. However just by reading the book I can understand all about Al Capone and Alcatraz. I loved the suspenseful plot throughout the story. The story still managed to humor me too. I liked the details the author put into the charachter Moose Flanagan. I also liked the slyness of Al Capone.
Even though the story was great. It contained a couple of minor errors in my opinion. I disliked the fact that the character Piper had a good side and a bad side. I rather have good charachters and bad charachters. Another subject from the story that irritates me is the fact that there were twenty-three children on Alcatraz island. That may be true but why would they put children where the most dangerous criminals in the world are? That makes no sense to me at all.
Regularly I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to read a good book but I have narrowed it down to a certain group of people. I think a young male interested in Alcatraz or Al Capone would be perfect for this book. This book would be great for a person who wants to read about a struggling young boy who resolves his problems. Overall I think this was a great book.
