Book Reviews of Al Capone Does My Shirts

Book Review: original, quality reading for young adults
Summary: 4 Stars

When his father gets a job as a guard and his sister is accepted at a special school, Moose's family moves to Alcatraz. Feeling like one of the prisoners, Moose finds himself trapped by his duties as an brother to a mentally challenged sister, unable to do the things that other kids his age are able to do. He also has to deal with his mother, who is obsessed with curing his sister, and Piper, the Warden's cute and trouble-making daughter. I admit that I picked up this young adult book based on its clever and catchy title (which actually has a surprising significance). It is a good, decently written young adult novel dealing with difficult family situations and dynamics. It could have been better, had it been more literary (such as drawing more direct parallels between Moose's life and his setting and the disconnected plot threads). A decent, rich read for grades 8 or 9. Grade: B+

Book Review: Great read!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is for not only Capone and Alcatraz buffs but also anyone who likes a good story. Gennifer Choldenko does a wonderful job of painting a picture of what it is like to live at Alcatraz and what is like to have special relationships with friends and family.

As a 7th grader, Moose finds himself living on Alcatraz Island because his dad got a job as a guard at the prison because times are tough in the 30's and it was the only job he could get. Moose quickly makes friends with the few children on the island, but finds it difficult to include his sister Natalie in everything. Natalie, who is autistic, is simply content in going outside and counting things. Moose and Natalie's mother think that Natalie can be cured or fixed and tries to change everything about her. Moose realizes how special his sister is and how much of an effect he has on her.

Book Review: great book
Summary: 4 Stars

Al Capone Does my Shirts is a fast and on to the point type of book. Its easy to read for my grade level. If you like fast and adventure books, Al Capone Does my Shirts would be good for you. The whole story really kicks in when Moose's dad had just received a job at Alcatraz as a security guard. Moose doesn't like Alcatraz because his dad had no time to hang out with Moose. Moose's sister is Actually older then Moose but said to be younger. She is autistic and doesn't speak a lot. If you took a marble form her marble collection she could tell you which marble you took with just a glance at the marble set.

I would give this book a 4/5. it's a really good book for people who like to read books that moves in a fast pace and have some great scenes, for example, when piper told every one about the cons when she wasn't suppose to say anything.

Moose was forced to live here because of his mother and his dad he is one of the gaurds there too. Moose gets scared his first night because he never knows when a murderer might show up. The island of Alcatraz is not where you want to live because that is where all the worst of the worst go like murderers and full on gangsters that will kill you no matter what. So Moose has to fit in at this island, not be tricked by this girl Piper, and keep his young and imature sister out of danger. I thought this book was intresting. i would recommend this book to middle schoolers or people who like out door books or who likes reading. I learned how it is to have a younger sister.
