Book Review: Historical fiction & family issues Summary: 5 Stars
This historical fiction book looks at the lives of the children whose parents were employed at Alcatraz, which meant they had to live on the island as well. One of the characters suffers from what we know as autism by today's standards, but the book takes place in 1935, eight years before autism was formally identified, .
I found the book humorous at times, and also heartwarming. If you know a child who must watch after a sibling with a mental disability, they may be able to connect with the main character's situation of wanting to do what all their friends are able to do, but also feeling the burden of responsibility to look after their brother or sister.
If your child is interested in history, or a reluctant reader, he/she may enjoy this book.

Al Capone Does My Shirts was a really entertaining book that I could relate to. In a lot of ways I am like the main character Moose myself; when I move to a new place, I keep all the rules, and don't seek a lot of attention. I am also negative about things I am forced to do, like when Moose was forced to move.
I really enjoyed the author's style of writing and the imagery that she used. It made the novel more enjoyable to read. The characters and the situations in the book were a lot of fun, because you could picture what the author was talking about.
Lastly, I loved the ending. Things worked out for the main characters, and the plot came together nicely. Al Capone Does My Shirts is a great historical fiction for kids to read.
Book Review: Fun book even for us older folk Summary: 5 Stars
This book was assigned to my students for summer reading by their English teacher, so I read it as well. It's a page turner! Simply written in a breezy, creative style, the author seamlessly introduces younger readers to a life unfamiliar to most of us, and to people of special needs, such as the sister of the main character, in a caring manner. As a history teacher, I did not know that families of guards and other workers once lived on Alcatraz. I look forward to discussing the book and the people we met, even the little touch of romance, with my students. And thanks to the "teaser" at the end of the book, I simply have to read the sequel, just to see what else Gennifer Choldenko has cooked up. And I'm 55! Highly recommended!
