Book Reviews of Almost Dead

Book Review: More twists and turns than San Francisco's Lombard Street
Summary: 4 Stars

Lisa Jackson first introduced the wealthy Cahill and Amhurst families to her readers in IF SHE ONLY KNEW. Marla Amhurst Cahill had been in a dreadful automobile accident. Plastic surgeons were able to restore her beauty, but brain trauma took its toll. Now, seven years later, the author brings readers back to the San Francisco area to revisit the Amhursts and Cahills in ALMOST DEAD, a gripping tale of greed, unrequited love, rejection, revenge, kidnapping and murder.

Multiple murders, that is. First, Eugenia, the Cahill matriarch, is pushed over a balcony in her mansion by someone who strongly resembles her daughter-in-law, Marla, who has just escaped from prison where she was serving time for murder. She plummets 20 feet to her death on the cold marble floor below. Her granddaughter Cissy, who visits Eugenia every Sunday night, is horrified to find the elderly woman lifeless. Paterno, the detective who had put Cissy's estranged mother in jail years ago, is investigating Marla's escape. Now he has a murder to solve.

Meanwhile, Marla's brother, Rory, is found dead in his room at the nursing home. Whoever planned this murder knew that Rory was highly allergic to seafood because the helpless patient died from complications of anaphylactic shock brought on by eating seafood-laced brownies. The nursing home staff saw a visitor enter Rory's room shortly before his life ended. Who is this mysterious Mary Smith who had been visiting Rory the past few weeks?

Next, Cissy's greedy cousin Cherise is shot. One by one, her family members are being eliminated, and Cissy realizes that neither she nor her young son, Beej, are safe. She decides to let her estranged husband Jack back into their lives. Jack is determined to keep his family safe from the bold killer, but it's much more difficult than he realizes when Beej's nanny, Tanya, is found dead. Little Beej is missing, and Cissy is receiving threatening phone calls from his kidnapper.

Diedre, a young woman who seems to have more than a passing interest in Cissy and her family, works as a barista at the coffee shop Cissy frequents. Under an alias, Diedre has rented a small bungalow that contains a hidden room in its basement. Who is she hiding there, and why? Who really is Elyse/Diedre, and what connection does she have to the Cahill family and the frequent murders?

Marla is finally found, and she's been shot as well. How long ago did that happen? Diedre can't recall. In fact, she was sure that Marla was still alive. And one more murder occurs --- Jack's father, Jonathan, who was involved with Diedre in a very unsavory scheme.

At three junctures in the book, a patient who is believed to be in an irreversible coma and lifeless is struggling frantically to let the medical personnel know she is still alive and needs to be helped. Each time she silently implores someone to help her, the reader wonders who the patient is. Is it Cissy? Marla? Diedre? Mary Smith?

This thriller has more twists and turns than San Francisco's Lombard Street. ALMOST DEAD is a great book to take to the beach, where you can enjoy being scared out of your wits in broad daylight and brilliant sunshine. Wanting to know what happens next and when the evil killer will finally get caught keeps you reading and turning the pages of this intriguing novel.
