Book Reviews of Alton Brown's Gear for Your KitchenBook Review: Deserves 10 stars!!! Summary: 5 Stars
It took me about an hour to read the first 45 pages. In them, I have learned the 'Pros' and 'Cons' of each type of cookware I own as well as how to properly care for each and, more importantly, 'WHY' each type is treated in a different way. For example, did you know that Anodized Aluminum is 30% harder than Stainless Steel, yet should never be washed in the dishwasher or the hard anodized surface will discolor and fail?
Interspersed among cookware facts and suggestions are recipies that will not overwhelm even the fledgeling chef. The most exotic ingredients in the first few of these were Kosher Sea Salt and Rice Wine Vinegar.
This 255 page hardcover book is written in a breezy, matter-of-fact way and has something for everyone. Its 'Bargain' price (list price of $27.50) plus free shipping makes this the perfect stocking stuffer and would be a godsend for young people setting up their first homes away from home.
Way to go Amazon and Alton Brown!
Book Review: Invaluable resource for the budding Home Chef Summary: 5 Stars
Alton brown is pretty much the only reason I watch the Food Network anymore. He's got a great attitude toward cooking and it certainly comes through in this book. Much like an episode of Good Eats, after finishing this book I actually feel like I learned something about the art and science of cooking, and the tools to do it, not just the list of ingredients in a recipe. The previous reviewers who complained about expensive recommendations, like the F. dick Multicut steel are missing the point. Alton didn't set out to make a book on outfitting your kitchen as cheap as possible. His recurring theme is spend wisely on core equipment where quality matters (Chefs knife, Heavy bottom Saute pan, etc), avoid expensive uni-taskers, and use cheaper alternatives where you can ($4 putty knife in place of a $30 gourmet "Board Scraper") I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to clean out the kitchen cabinets and get properly outfitted for some serious cooking.
Book Review: Best Book to Own... especially if you are moving Summary: 5 Stars
Alton Brown's Gear for Your Kitchen is a GREAT book... if you are that kind of person. I am a huge AB fan and love his work. I am also concerned with buying kitchen tools and appliances that work well but do not cost me an arm or a leg. Alton takes this to task an tells you what you need and what you don't, what is important and what is not. It is really Alton Brown's product reviews, except he goes into what is required of the product to be great in the first place. Also, do not be fooled by all the kitchen gear talk, it is full of recipes too. I recently moved into a house (finally! My own kitchen!)and have constantly used this book to determine the things I need, such as cookware, kitchen electrics and small tools such as peelers and tongs (yes he goes that in depth) If you or the person you are buying this for enjoys cooking and is look for guide that will be useable for just about everything in and relating to your kitchen, this is the best place to start!
Book Review: Comprehensive, thoughful book. Summary: 4 Stars
Outstanding book. A must for cooking enthusiasts. Beware of spending a lot of money on buying stuff though.
