Book Reviews of American Prince: A MemoirBook Review: Great Hollywood Read That Will Really Entertain You! Summary: 5 Stars
Tony Curtis has written a terrific autobiography, complete with honest, hard-hitting stories about his difficult youth in New York, and dishing some outstanding dirt about Hollywood and the characters that inhabit it past and present.
Curtis is obviously a man of great courage, because he really does 'tell all', pulls no punches and spares no detail in retelling his life.
This book should be the standard that ALL Hollywood personalities and, indeed, anyone who writes an autobiography, should aspire to! Detailed, honest, opinionated, never coy or demure, and loaded with interesting stories and anectdotes! It grabs the reader and never lets go, making you smile, laugh, feel sad, and maybe just shake your head in wonderment at the endless parade of beautiful movie stars Curtis has dallianced with.
Tony Curtis really has nothing to hide in his way of thinking, and it makes for a juicy read for the rest of us!
Thanks Tony for a terrific autobiography, it was well worth reading!
Book Review: Yadda, yadda Summary: 2 Stars
Just what was Tony Curtis' problem? He makes Sweet Smell of Success, Trapeze and Some Like it Hot then spends the next ten years or so in mediocre sex comedies. Then he makes The Boston Strangler, a stunning performance in an excellent film, then spends the next ten years making even worse sex comedies, and drifting into TV. Then, more or less, showbiz oblivion. There are no answers to be found here. He admits to money worries, woman trouble and substance abuse, but we never get a handle on why things went so badly career-wise. This is not a gripping read. There are some good stories but we've heard a lot of them before. There's a lot left out - neither McCoy nor Vegas, two TV series in which he starred get mentioned, nor does the novel he published in the seventies (maybe he never read it, let alone wrote it). Like the man's life, it seems, the book drifts. I'm happy that Tony is now securely married, living in Vegas and enjoying coming to the end of his life. I enjoyed coming to the end of his life story.
Book Review: What other inaccuracies are in the book? Summary: 2 Stars
Read the book and some parts are interesting. But the part that galled me, was his section on Marilyn Monroe during the making of "Some Like it Hot". You know when people die, if you're any decent kind of human being, you at least give them a modicum of respect and get the facts straight. Take for instance Marilyn's preganancy during the movie. It is WELL documneted through hundreds of books that Marilyn lost her baby through miscarriage during this time period. She and Arthur Miller had been trying to have a child for a couple of years and sadly weren't able too. Curtis says wrongly that Marilyn had an abortion after the movie. Totally untrue and not a hard fact to come across. I guess when you're trying to re-invent history and make people think you're this awesome cool cat(when you're not) vanity and greed take over. Is the whole book this bloated and false? What a total waste of time!
Book Review: I understand a little bit better Summary: 1 Stars
Just read some of the other reviews and they have summed it pretty well about the actor, the love, the man.
I gave it 1 star based on his morals. I know sounds stupid, but I wanted to hear about the man and his life. Well, I got an earful. He tells all, but in such a manner, he's oblivious to his faults. This is an egotistical cheating man. He even states how it was OK, for him to cheat, but went crazy when his spouse did the same. I don't have much room for that kind of thinking. He didn't understand how the relationships did get to see or develop with his children. Duh Tony. It doesn't take much beyond common sense you were a bad influence all around. Whoopty-do, you were a great lover. So what. You were not a family man and you should have never pursued such responsibilities.
Someone was right before. I should have seen the flag with the title.
Book Review: Wow...just...wow. Summary: 2 Stars
And not a good wow, I've never seen a Tony Curtis movie, and after reading this book, I doubt I ever will. He comes across as somebody I really want to like, but even in telling his own side of the story, he comes across as a louse, I would hate to hear how he comes off in the other side of the story.
This book is a long list of marriages, and an even longer list of affairs, he cheats like most people breathe. Then he has the nerve to be angry when he catches his young wife cheating on him, I wanted to shake her hand. He even hit on his current wife while she was on a date with someone else, that it worked tells me he finally found someone he truly deserves.
I can't say some of the Hollywood stories aren't entertaining, but they aren't really worth wading through the distastful and cringe worthy rememberances of this odd man.
