Book Reviews of American Prince: A Memoir

Book Review: No class at all
Summary: 1 Stars

For any one who ever thought Tony Curtis had any class, wit or charm, this book will set you straight on that delusion. Mr. Curtis loses no opportunity to trash ex-wives, especially the dead ones, or former co-stars expecially those he can claim to have slept with. Apparently this man never took off his pants without keeping score and a record so he could tell others about it later. We're not talking affairs that touched his heart, we're talking tally sheet lists of easy scores or near misses for reasons other than an attraction to Mr. Curtis. Apparently they all panted for him but a few were prevented from acting on those impulses by outstanding circumstances. The slightly sleazy cheesy opportunist Curtis played in Operation Petticoat? apparently that wasn't acting, that was the real deal.

Book Review: Should be titled "It was never my fault."
Summary: 2 Stars

I liked Tony Curtis before I read this book. I usually enjoy show biz bios but this one is so unremittingly nasty, I finally gave up about 3/4 of the way through. Even the people he claimed to like are trashed. The anecdotes are not so much amusing as self aggrandizing.

This was a man who never met a woman he didn't try to have sex with and yet he was horrified when he was cuckolded by his wife and astonished that his marriages failed. He claims to be self aware but apparently he never learned anything from his mistakes.

He relentlessly trashes people who are dead and cannot defend themselves.

If you enjoy his movies, don't read the book. You will never be able to look at him the same way again.

Book Review: A "Princely" Entertainer
Summary: 4 Stars

Tony Curtis can do no wrong....as an entertainer that is. All his movies are entertaining. His serious roles "SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS" to his comedy hits "SOME LIKE IT HOT" truly make him an underrated film star. Unlike other autobiographies, TONY CURTIS AMERICAN PRINCE, A Memoir gives the reader an inside look at Bernie Schwartz without the boring "I was born"....part and takes the reader onto the streets of New York with this tough little Jewish kid to the inside of Hollywood studios and the folks he met along the way. Curtis opens up his life with candor, his ups and downs. If you like TONY CURTIS you'll like the book. Curtis gives up with what he remembers and in some cases I wish he remembered more.

Book Review: Entertaining
Summary: 4 Stars

As someone has also previously mentioned, I was never a big fan of Tony Curtis. This was especially true after he dumped Janet Leigh and his children for a teenaged Christine Kaufmann. That being said, Tony was undoubtedly an important figure in movies during the 50s & 60s, though his looks kept him in the limelight more than his acting ability.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book since, having grown up during this period, I could easily relate to the references made to different celebrities and productions. If it weren't for Tony's ever inflated ego occasionally popping up to justify some of his indiscretions I would have given this 5 stars. But hey! He wouldn't be Tony Curtis without it.

Book Review: loved it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been pleasantly surprised by Tony Curtis book as I had read reviews that were very negative and demeaning about the fact that everything was about Tony etc., but after all it is an autobiography so what else do people expect. His life growing up was hell and he felt like an outsider and was very insecure. Who can blame him. I dont agree with his sense of morality but many people not so famous act the same way. I picked up a feeling that here is a lot of decency in Tony Curtis and I respect him for being a survivor against the odds. How would any of have acted under such circumstances especially being poor and jewish in those times. I enjoyed your book Tony and wish you well.
