Book Reviews of Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times

Book Review: A true man of integrity!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is wonderful and inspiring. I recommend this for any high school U.S. History course (infact, I use it in mine). The pages of this book reveal a man whose time and values have melted away into selfishness and greed in America. Jackson was willing to sacrifice his life/career for the safety of the American people. I wish I could be half the man Jackson was. All politicians should read this. It proves anyone can succeed and that people only do what they want to do! I am proud that we have him on the $20 bill. It is a small token for a man who had principal, integrity and moral virtues to do what was right and just...read this book and you will have confidence that leadership can work if people are willing to sacrifice.

Book Review: Average biography
Summary: 3 Stars

This book gives a reader the feeling that it is product of graduate students' research slapped together by Professor Brands. It is full of extended quotes rather than analysis and uses research from previous Brands' books on Texas history and the California gold rush. As to substance, the discussion of the contoversy surrounding the Second Bank of the United States does not really explain the context of the fight, rather it focuses on the personalities of Jackson and Biddle. More space is spent on the Indian wars than on Jackson's presidency. Moreover, the author does not, in my opinion, spend enough time discussing Jacksonian Democracy, an extremely important theme in US history. All in all, a decent book but not a really good one.

Book Review: Extremely Well Written!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a history buff, and I especially appreciate a good biography, but it can be hard to find one that is informative, comprehensive, AND enjoyable to read. This book certainly is all of those things. You will learn something and be entertained at the same time (at least I was). Brands is an excellent writer, as well as a careful historian. No dry recitation of "just the facts" here - Brands moves quickly over his material, offering thoughtful opinions along the way, but he also takes time to explore Jackson's character as well as the culture in which Jackson lived. This is by far the best one volume biography of Andrew Jackson the man, not just the President, that I have read, and I recommend it very highly.

Book Review: Good Biography
Summary: 4 Stars

A very good and indept look at Andrew Jackson. The author was very thorough including a very good look at early 19th century American. Andrew Jackson's a contraverisal President. On the good side he defeated the British at the amazing Battle of New Orleans, help in expanding into the West, a great soldier, clearly loved his wife Rachel enough to duel to defend her, and was probably the only president who could threaten a state with military force if it tried to leave the Union and tough enough to make it happen. On the flip side his percusion of Indians, the Trail of Tears, his many duels makes him a very complex and sometimes hard to understand person. But still a great biography.

Book Review: Life and Times
Summary: 5 Stars

The title is appropriate. The Life and Times of Andrew Jackson were far more interesting than ever depicted in the history classes I took in either high school or college. H.W. Brands goes into details of what was occurring in the Great Lakes, Florida, Texas and other pioneer regions that would have an impact on Jackson and that had a molding influence on the birth of our nation. Andrew Jackson was obviously was a common man who rose to be extraordinary. He understood what was required to tame the country and he acted forcefully without being hindered by thoughts of political correctness that seems to pervade all politics today.
