Book Reviews of Animals on the Other SideBook Review: Why oh why Summary: 1 Stars
I truly have to wonder what motivates people to write a book like this. The simple fact is that animals and humans die. Wanting to know what happens afterwards is an understandable emotion, but you won't find the answers in this book. Within you'll find 32 pages of illustrations showing animals being "happy" in heaven - pandas cuddling cats, prey and predators standing happily side by side, and lots of dogs. Each picture is accompanied by a pat explanation of how animals live in harmony in heaven, how they don't hunt or kill each other and how they all play together surrounded by various human artifices. Blah blah blah.
I don't know about you, but I'm guessing that an animal's view of heaven (if it were capable of conceiving or expressing any such notion) would not be to play with its earthly enemies whilst surrounded by fountains and buildings. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that a dog's view of heaven is more likely to consist of leading a large pack, hunting down prey, rearing many pups and having a full stomach.
And if we're to include dogs in this heaven, where do we stop? Mice? Dinosaurs? Slugs? Ants? Amoeba? Bacteria? Did it really take four people (including the two actual authors whose names appear below Sylvia and her son) to produce this twaddle?
Grief is a terrible thing, especially when people exploit it. Sit down with your kid and tell them the truth about death. No one knows for sure what happens to someone when they die, but so long as they still live on in our thoughts they are still with us "in spirit". Perhaps your kids might surprise you with their maturity. Will they grieve? Of course they will. Will they get over their loss? With your support they'll come away stronger than ever. I can think of no greater harm you can do a kid than coddle them with the guff that this book presents as fact.
Book Review: From Love Not Fear Summary: 4 Stars
I found fascinating the smear campaign that has been obviously placed by some very fear based individuals. Though I believe the book could have been written in a more literary fashion, I do understand the reasoning behind writing it in a style that conveys the message with clarity.
I have never met nor have dealings on any level with Sylvia Browne or those affiliated with her. This review comes without bias. I do not have a religious agenda and I am not trying to spread the fear based rhetoric that has been placed within these reviews. After all, it is just as easy to follow up on the agendas and locations of those who have "anonymously" left their reviews on a book that they have clearly not read to its entirety; for if they had, then they would have seen that the message is simple and harmless unless it shakes their own faith into adjustment.
Does not the bible say in the ten commandments to "not to bare false witness against your fellow man?" Although this could be interpreted to only apply to those who share the same religious and cultural beliefs.
In any event, this book was refreshing and an easy read. The message will continue to exist in this world becouse it is truth and it comes from love. Why else would it come under attack from those whose love and beliefs have conditions? Perhaps it is because it rattles their very belief system that it so fragile, that they must try to convince strangers that this book is questionable at best. I pray that the rafter from their eyes has been removed before they focus on the straw in these authors eyes. Where did that thought come from? The bible of course, and it was Jesus' own words.
Book Review: Sylvia Sells the Other, Ooops, I Mean Sees the Other Side Summary: 5 Stars
Sylvia Browne, who correctly predicted that AIDS would be in full remission by 1998, that Breast Cancer would be absolutely prevented and cured by 1999, that Bill Bradley would win the Presidency in 2000, and that David Letterman would quit his show that same year (I wonder what he's doing now?), has turned her prodigious psychic gifts to describing the other side for children.
I highly recommend this sensitive and informative book from Sylvia and her son Chris. It's very reassuring for children to know that the scores of smashed raccoons, possums, and squirrels that they encounter on the road to soccer practice every day are intact and happy "at home" as Sylvia calls it. While this is indeed a wonderful book for children, it's filled with such amazingly precise detail about the other side that's it fascinating for adults too. Case in point: I mistakenly believed unicorns were mythological creatures, but Sylvia confirms they exist on the other side. My daughter was thrilled and now can't wait to see them.
My daughter and I also learned that the other side is always heated to "a perfect 78 degrees", and that while there is snow, its "warm and fluffy." In fact, the other side sounds so wonderful that I have increased my intake of red meat and tobacco products just to speed up the process of getting there! Now some of you naysayers and critical types may doubt that Sylvia actually knows that on the other side "we can communicate with animals telepathically", but I say to you if she's such a fraud why do people pay her $750 a pop for a telephone reading, or why would Montel put her on his show? Case closed.
Book Review: Beautiful and Comforting Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a fan and supporter of Sylvia Browne for years and have picked up almost every book of hers. I recently lost my beloved cat suddenly and within a week, I headed to the bookstore to pick up this book. I knew from some of her writings in other books what our beloved furbabies go home to, but I really wanted the additional comfort of a book devoted just to that subject.
I knew, before purchasing the book, that it was designed as more of a picture book, although it is hardly just for children. The pictures are beautiful and although I finished the text and book itself in probably ten minutes, I found myself crying tears of relief and even joy at reading of the happiness, security and health that my precious furbaby now had.
Anyone who has lost a beloved pet should read these inspiring words - - and feel the immense relief of knowing that yes, we will see our sweet babies again and they will be restored to full health and gloriously happy. And while this book is absolutely wonderful for children, adults will benefit as well. A definite keeper in my library.
Five stars, all the way.
Book Review: Push it to the side Summary: 2 Stars
Kids everywhere have wanted to know what happens to their beloved pets after death. Well apparent psychic Sylvia Browne has capitalized on this sad, confused feeling that former pet owners may feel. The result is a little book called Animals on the Other Side. At first, upon hearing about this book and what it was about, I thought it would be a nice little story about animals in heaven,(I'd never heard of Sylvia Browne before, being a teen)ut I was wrong. This woman actually thinks people will believe she can see heaven through the eyes of animals. C'mon, even children aren't that gullible!
If you do happen the buy Animals on the Other Side, I would recommend warning your children that this is only a story and may or may not be true. It could still be comforting and yet the child would know this book doesn't exactly speak a truth about their pet.
I'll hand it to the author(my mom's a fan). Writting a book like this would be sure to bring in big bucks.
As always, R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer.
