Book Reviews of Anthem

Book Review: A Young Womans Vision of Man's Greatest Triumphs
Summary: 4 Stars

Ayn Rand is an icon - whose work's have continually become more and more prophetic. What more can be said about her then what already has been said?

I cannot give Anthem five stars because only Rand's latter works deserve those and this story obviously has the makings of someone who is still young and in the learning stages.

The story here takes place in the future - Rand's vision of where social collectivism will take us. - A world where everyone is equal but everyone must adhere to stifling laws and regulations of, probably, well meaning socialist bureaucrats.

Anthem is similar in some ways to Orwell's 1984 except Anthem is not ultimately bleak and pessimistic about man. Rand only condemns certain philosophies held by some men not all men. Anthem is actually homage to man's innate, independence, romanticism, strength and individualism. Rand predicts mans best qualities and greatest accomplishments have seen light and will come to see the light again.

Anthem was written by a very wizened and ambitious teenager who lived through two political revolutions in Russia. Rand may have more accurately, then Orwell, predicted that the roadblocks to self realization, and innovation, and the loss of individualism would come to fruition due to philosophies inherent in socialism. Time will tell.

A good read and excellent reading of this book by the narrator.

Summary of Anthem

Anthem is Ayn Rand's classic tale of a dark future age of the great "We"-a world that deprives individuals of name, independence, and values. Written a full decade before George Orwell's "1984," this dystopian novel depicts a man who seeks escape from a society in which individuality has been utterly destroyed. Rand expertly shows how collectivism (including social programs in the United States) destroys freedom and individuality. Her philosophy is simple: "planning" is a synonym for "collectivism," and "collectivism" is a metaphor for communism and tyranny. This important book should be read by all who are concerned about the role of government in modern life. This publication from Boomer Books is specially designed and typeset for comfortable reading.
