Book Review: This book is an excellent personal or institutional resource.
Summary: 5 Stars
First off, I'll say that I am an advanced Logic user. Second, I was one of the technical reviewers of this book. The author is a friend who asked me to review his book before its release. I did not (and will not) receive any compensation for writing this review. I am writing this review because I believe the author did an excellent job -- I'd buy more technical reference pubs if they were all written this well.
My background: I've been using Logic for about 10 years, I am also fluent with competing apps. I have owned/operated a public recording studio, I have been a college instructor, I hold a degree in Audio Production, I am a musician, blah, blah blah. In short, I would usually not consider purchasing a technical guide since I could probably pass the exams without reading the books (this book covers one of multiple levels of certification) - I just thought I'd quickly clear up where I am coming from and why I read it.
I have recommended David's book to end users in the past. I used to teach Logic in college level lecture and production labs. I moved to a different field of work within audio/music before the book's publication, *but* if I were currently teaching a class on Logic, I would definitely use David's text. I have reviewed publications for similar audiences and read many similar books over the years. I have never seen a better introduction to Logic, regardless of release version. Furthermore, it stands out as an excellent technical publication. B.J. Shulman worded it well: 'This book is not only the best book on the subject, it should also be used as an example for "How to Write a How-to Book."'
Some users may find the pace slow, as the text will initially walk you through the each step. All things considered, this is not a bad approach since the author assumes the reader knows how to use a computer, but is new to Logic. By the time you're a few chapters into the book, the pace will have increased to a comfortable rate as the reader is expected to retain what has been presented: If you have some experience with Logic, do not judge the content's depth by the first few chapters.
Considering the amount of photos and step by step instruction, there really is a wealth of content in this book. David covers all sorts of topics, setting up multitrack sessions in Logic, editing audio and MIDI, recording... everything you want to know to hit the ground running without digesting the manuals. If you've ever seen the boxed product for Logic Studio, but never looked inside, it is nearly all physical manuals which are thousands of pages. Naturally, David doesn't cover everything in the manual, as it is not intended to be a replacement for the manual. Speaking of content, the book includes a DVD of sessions which are used in the tutorials. This alone is worth more than the cost to some people - not every one has access to a multitrack session files from real recording sessions. Even when I attended college, we were usually working with student's recordings (including our own). The content here is good, and varies stylistically. That resource could be an excellent learning tool for somebody who has not gone to college (most of us), but wants to improve her/his craft by examining the composition and structures of multitrack recordings and working them until they really shine.
Logic has historically had the reputation of being the most difficult audio editor/sequencer to learn - David's an expert on the subject and has made this process quite painless. The explanations are well written and it's even an entertaining read (admittedly, I can be a bit of a nerd). As I mentioned, I am an advanced Logic user, and the content was hardly new for me, though a considerable amount of the content specific to version 8 was new to me at the time. Despite all that, I enjoyed the read and going through the exercises! It was written that well. It is (by far) my initial recommendation for personal, professional/transitionary, and institutional texts on the subject, and I am hoping David continues to write these texts in the future because this pub stands tall among the application specific texts that I have read.
