Book Reviews of Architectural LaboratoriesBook Review: Good review of Young Architects work.. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great book showing the work of sutdents under the tutelage of 2 progressive Architects... Not all the images are great, nor is the text completely compelling, but there is a beauty evident in the initial investigations of these young students... This read like a book that could document the beginning of a new movement, with the students documented within becoming players in the landscape in the near future.. you can already find the work of architects like Dave Burns (Auburn Univ) and Paul Preissner in other biennales and exhibitions and influencing a 4th breed of students.. Colubmia and UCLA were two schools that have trained a new generation and this book in a way puts an end to the investigations of those institutions and starts anew.
Summary of Architectural LaboratoriesTogether with a select group of international students from Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles, highly respected architects and architectural theoreticians Hani Rashid and Greg Lynn transformed the United States Pavilion during the Venice Biennale 2000 into a four-week workshop and forum for architectural discourse: a laboratory. Investigating, producing, and reviewing a variety of architectural schemes, the participants demonstrated the practice and direction of a new generation of architects. Architectural Laboratories presents the results of this workshop through 10 projects that focus on the themes "The Embryologic House" and "Augmented Architecture." Guest critiques of the students' designs are offered by philosopher and cultural critic Mark C. Taylor, ZKM chairman Peter Weibel, and Max Hollein, the United States Commissioner for the biennale.
