Book Review: My first and last Cussler novel
Summary: 2 Stars
I didn't have high expectations coming into this. I just wanted an entertaining read. Despite being very familiar with the Cussler name, this was the first novel I read with Clive Cussler listed as the author. According to other reviews, Cussler likely had nothing to do with the writing of this book. I'm not sure if that is good or bad.
Like I said, I didn't have high expectations. I wanted a good adventure story ala Steve Berry or Lincoln Child. The adventure in this story might have been okay, if whoever did write it had managed to shave off about 200 absolutely unnecessary pages.
The story itself was okay. The Cheese factor was pretty high. Given that the driving tension in the book centered around avoiding World War Three between the United States and ... CANADA. No, that's not a misprint. Yes, the entire book was about dire military escalation between the US and Canada. I just ... I have no words.
There were also a whole lot of dropped plot lines. The story is told in sections and the two heroes of the first section just disappear halfway through the book. The villains are laughingly one dimensional. The evil mastermind whose one and only motivation was greed managed to steamroll every single person with whom he crossed paths pretty much without exception. Then the paid assassin who at no point seemed very bright somehow managed to stay half a step ahead of the good guys for 99% of the novel ... And the assassin's particular method of murder became more bizarre as the book went on.
It all wrapped up tidily and conveniently for the main characters. The villains both ended in painfully "poetic" ways. The story was fun. It would have been more fun for me if any aspect of the story - other than all the endless yammering about boats - had any basis in fact. As far as I can tell, all the rest of it was just completely manufactured. I think whoever wrote the novel could take a note from Steve Berry or Dan Brown and do at least a little bit of research.
The character interactions were another matter entirely. I cringed at a lot of the dialog. As I wrote earlier, I am not at all familiar with Cussler's Dirk Pitt universe. But the fact that Dirk has a long lost son named, conveniently, Dirk. Groan. And the fact that Dirk has a twin sister. And that although Dirk Sr. and the kids have apparently only recently reunited, they're all very close and one happy family. At least that's what we're told. Despite all the lives in peril, we never actually get any interaction between the twins or their father. Also, the crap about Dirk Sr.'s wife wanting him to stay safe at home, but knowing she can't ever tame her man so she wouldn't dare try, again, I'm at a loss for words for how god awful that was.
Okay, I take it back. I was going to give this book 3 stars, but after writing all this out, I'm bumping it down to 2 stars.
