Book Reviews of Astrology for the Soul (Bantam Classics)Book Review: For anyone truly on a path toward self-understanding Summary: 5 Stars
As another reviewer wrote earlier, he/she felt compelled to write a review for the first time because of this book's impact. I had used astrology, among other things, as a tool for self-understanding for years, picking apart my birth chart, before coming across this book and being exposed to the influence of the 'nodes of the moon' for the first time. For those who might normally poo-poo astrology, any fear of "astro-jargon" and superficial description quickly fades with the startling insightfulness of this inspired work. A friend, who had no experience with astrology beyond reading about her sun sign in the newspaper, borrowed the book, studied her node's profile, referencing it again and again, until I had to ask for her to return it.
I suppose people come upon this book when they've realized their existence is beyond just this lifetime, and they are really ready to work on their 'karma,' and deal with the themes that are really 'running' them in this lifetime. This is why I started studying astrology in the first place; this is the kind of insight I was looking for when I chose to pursue a psychology degree in college, as I tried to "figure myself out." I have read many, many books over the years from a variety of fields in my quest. This is one of the few dog-eared books on my shelf, that I've returned to again and again, always being made more and more aware of myself in pondering the amazingly rich descriptions of my nodal sign and house position.
Book Review: The Essence of Astrology Summary: 5 Stars
Many astrology books out there are merely indulgement in philosophy. Astrology for the Soul is a practical book, applicable to any reader's life with razor clear explanations that cut to the heart of the matter. Jan sacrifices technical jargon and too much compartmentalization to completely integrate the life lesson contained in each node. While she doesn't specifically identify the south node, each node is dealt with showing the true polarity and with details of the north and south aspects of nodal placement: the negative karmic patterns of the south node that must be transcended, and the positive qualities of the north node which must be consciously integrated. Jan includes down to earth, plain language descriptions of the qualities that must be moved out of subconsciousness into consciousness so that the reader is able to recognize that within which he most tries to conceal. She includes healing affirmations and specific practices which make sense and work. This book came into my life in an unexpected way and quickly has become the heart of my analysis and the entry point into any chart that I use. While individual house placements are not included, and aspects to nodes are not covered, the essential core meanings are included here for the reader to build from. A tribute to the essential meaning of Astrology, the purpose of which is to add to people's lives and give them information which they can use and not merely think about.
Book Review: If you let yourself read this with an open mind you could be Summary: 5 Stars
amazed, astonished, helped, intrigued. I just started studying astrology and recently joined AA. An odd combo I realize, but such is life. With a Gemini north node in my fourth house, I have read the relevant chapters and have been amazed, astonished, helped, intrigued and plenty more (let me get my thesaurus...). Read in conjunction with AA's Big Book, I have felt some real healing in my life. Both are eminently practical, easy to read, easily understandable and, best of all, helpful. As I said, I have just begun my studying of astrology (I have read Tarot for more than 15 years) and am full of wonder and awe at the riches it has revealed. Spiller's book has allowed me to look at some less than pleasant parts of my personality with something new to me: hope. I am eagerly looking forward to her next book on aspects--a subject which I am just about to start studying seriously. I picked up this book while looking at basic astrology titles, and I can recommend it without reservation to anyone with even a cursory interest in serious astrology. You won't be confused or overwhelmed by what can be an enormously complex subject. Read it with an open mind and it can be an invaluable tool. It has literally been a source of revelation to me.
Book Review: Horrible Horrible Horrible Summary: 1 Stars
This book is awful! I am an astrologer for over 30 years. You cannot have a North Node without a South. By the way, a client brought me this who got it from a Who thought they could benefit in their personal life. She was very upset because she found herself unable to relate to what was being said....she being North Node in Aries. It turned out , thanks to Ms Spiller..that this woman was having doubts about herself in areas that she clearly had nothing in common with in this particular Node. The point being, people who are spiritually seeking read this trash think it is complete and have no experience in Astrology to make any distinctions. This book is manipulative and destructive in my opinion. It is lacking in credibility and generalizes in ways that would make a sane person doubt themselves. I am not sure how there are so many positive reveiws; as this book is certainly not a valid depiction of some great spiritul self help book. My suggestion...... if someone gives you this as a gift and tells you " you should read this because it will really help you......." run the other way. And leave the book on the table......or better yet in the trash!

Book Review: Buy this book if you want to feel badly about yourself. Summary: 1 Stars
My North Node is in Libra. Ms. Spillar described this placement as a person that is "selfish," "inconsiderate" and "insensitive." Why not just tell me I'm a "bad" person, thank you very much!! There is an old Catholic school girls saying that goes something like this, "what you say to me bounces off me and lands on you." A psychologist would call it projection. Ms. Spillar seems to see in people with their North Node in Libra what she can not acknowledge in herself. Her writing is insulting and destructive, not affirming or helpful. Compare this with what the World of Wisdom Horoscope Interpreter by WizardWorks says about the North Node in Libra, "A major dilemma in your life is in finding a balance between listening to and acting upon your own personal needs as opposed to taking into consideration and compromising with the needs of others." Ms. Spillar, you should be ashamed of yourself, for trying to make money by insulting others in such a judgmental fashion. And shame on you Amazon.com, for promoting this book. I'm sorry I took the time to seek it out based on your promotion.
