Hi, I am Noel and I have been invited by AMAZON to review my recent purchase entitled "ASTRONOMY FOR DUMMIES". I have no way of knowing if the Reader has any relationship with this series of Books before but if not, my most important point is that these Books are ANYTHING but AIMED AT DUMMIES. They are "FOR THE REST OF US". Personally, I have been into Astronomy since age 10 (I am now 68) and along the way, I have owned a series of Telescopes to better enjoy the Sky. I would fit into the great "MEDIAN" sector of the "HOBBY" and describe myself as a "uneducated accomplished amateur astronomer".
The book was purchased following a long association with the "SERIES" from COMPUTERS, LINUX, and about everything in between and I found this TOME to be of the same great standard as every other that I have read. I purchased it through AMAZON for the simple reason that the PURCHASE PRICE, POSTAGE to my door was about just over half the AUSTRALIAN shelf price. We pay this ridiculous GOODS & SERVICES TAX in Aus. Even on food. Australian Retailers are jumping up and down but hey, it is my DOLLAR.
The book is the same standard to which I have grown accustomed over the years and cross referenced to a very helpful extent. Stephen P Maran has an obvious great CV and it shows in his work but never does it come through as Condescending. The book - for what it is - is a brilliant reference book for Astronomers of all levels and particularly beginners or Intermediates such as I. My experience with Amazon was excellent, considering the Christmas Rush, the book arrived in reasonable time (there was no rush from my point of view) but I was glad to get my hands on it.
From my early days laying on my back on the front lawn in rural South Australia and wondering "WHAT IS UP THERE" through to now owning a 76 mm SKYWATCHER and a SAXON 200 MM DOBSONIAN with an excellent collection of very, very quality EYE PIECES, not to mention THREE PAIRS OF ASTRO-BINOCULARS; this book is invaluable to me as a reference and a guide. The Maps are Topical and helpful at once. I have many more books on my WISH LIST and AMAZON will be hearing from me again shortly. My best regards and commendations to AMAZON. Noel P. M.
