After having read this book, I discovered that it was the second part of another book. No wonder At True Believer felt so disjointed. It was like coming into the middle of movie and wondering why I should care about characters that had no depth for me. There should be a warning on this particular book that it is not a stand-alone novel, that in order to feel sympapthy for the characters you should read the Blind Trust first.
Coming into the middle of Lexie and Jeremy's relationship, actually he was leaving his life in New York to marry a woman he hardly knew, who was pregnant with his child. Then I find out that Jeremy's first wife left him because he couldn't sire children. When Jeremy gets an email asking him how he knows the child is his, I really lost it because the book never explains how Lexie got pregnant except to hint at an old boyfriend. Really cheap plotting if you ask me. It's like putting a red herring in a story and then never using it.
Then there were the times when Lexie acted mean and manipulative but this was just chocked up to being pregnant, or was explained away by Doris the loving grandmother. I kept thinking that Jeremy should run like the wind to get away from this woman, and when his friend suggests waiting to get to know Lexie better, Jeremy won't hear of it. The book just played on my emotions like a high school prom queen on a power trip.
I prefer characters to be more realistically written, so this book just didn't do it for me. By the time the big climax came, I could have cared less what happened to the characters. I have enjoyed other Nicholas Sparks novels so maybe I could be persuaded to read True Believer but then again, what would be the point? I already know how things end.
Summary of At First Sight
There are a few things Jeremy Marsh was sure he'd never do: he'd never leave New York City; never give his heart away again after barely surviving one failed marriage; and, most of all, never become a parent. Now, Jeremy is living in the tiny town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, married to Lexie Darnell, the love of his life, and anticipating the birth of their daughter. But just as his life seems to be settling into a blissful pattern, an unsettling and mysterious message re-opens old wounds and sets off a chain of events that will forever change the course of this young couple's marriage.Dramatic, heartbreaking and surprising, this is a story about the love between a man and a woman and between a parent and a child. More than that, it is a story that beautifully portrays how the same emotion that can break your heart is also the one that will ultimately heal it.
While the novel picks up the tale of Lexie Darnell and Jeremy Marsh that started in True Believer and will delight fans of that novel, it stands on its own as one of Nicholas Sparks's most deeply moving love stories.
