Book Reviews of Auto Repair For DummiesBook Review: Now I understand! Look out drivers! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't own a car, but this book was recommended to me by a friend (OK, my therapist...) to get me ready to "climb into the driver's seat." It helped me greatly. In other words, VROOM VROOM VROOM if you know what I mean! This isn't one of those books that make you want to brush your teeth. Now I feel like I understand how cars work, so I can smell the coffee (that's right!) now as well as the chocolates. I liked the line "No pain - no stain!" Thank you Deanna for creating a safe haven for those of us too afraid to ask the service man for servicing.
Book Review: Auto Repair for Dummies Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this book because I wanted to expand my knowledge on cars and engines. It did not work out as expected. If you have NEVER worked on a car before and you have NO IDEA about parts then I do recommend this book to you. For someone that knows even the basics this book is totally pointless and boring. There is nothing to teach you. If you are the kind of person that brings the car to the mechanic and is like do whatever you have to do then buy the book. If you can make something as simple as an oil change by yourself then do not.
Book Review: Good for beginners, but mostly about older car systems... Summary: 4 Stars
This book is excellent for anyone who has no idea about how cars work and what parts under the hood have what functions... I do think though, it lacks information about fairly modern technology that is being used in cars... It highlights the workings of cars mostly in the 70's, 80's without much emphasis on newer generation cars... But i still feel, it is important to have a sound knowledge about the original, more simplistic systems of the car before advancing to the newer, more efficient and complicated systems...
Book Review: You won't be a dummy after using this book Summary: 4 Stars
I just got the book last night, and I was pretty impressed. I had been concerned that it would be too low-level - "the key goes in here" kind of stuff. While it does start out with some pretty basic stuff, tools and how to use them etc., the book also has some great information for those who aren't terrified of working on their cars. I just bought an old car and I want to/have to learn how to do a lot of minor repairs and normal maintenance. This book will serve as a great reference.
Book Review: Extremely useful to this novice Summary: 5 Stars
I've always relied on mechanics (with mixed results), but I wanted to know what was going on with my car and to be able to perform basic maintenance myself. This book is very easy to use (MUCH better than my owner's manual). It provides a good overview of how cars work, as well as specific advice for particular repairs and maintenance. If you're already a gearhead, this is presumably too basic, but if the inside of your car is a great big mystery to you, this is definitely the book to get.
