Book Reviews of Baby 411, 4th Edition: Clear Answers & Smart Advice For Your Baby's First Year (Baby 411: Clear Answers and Smart Advice for Your Baby's First Year)Book Review: Mixed feelings: GREAT in some ways, troublesome in others. Look elsewhere for sleep advice. Summary: 4 Stars
I am at a loss as to how to review this book. Perhaps the core problem is that this book purports to be a baby care book for everyone, as well as an unbiased arbiter of other sources of baby information. There are disclaimers here and there about the importance of following your own instincts, but such passages are minimal. Maybe that's just the cost of attempting to provide a concise, clear-cut, wide-ranging guide to a vast amount of information. Whatever the reason, if you buy this book, just know that it is likely not the only book you will want to read.
Sounds like common sense, but when I was an expectant parent overwhelmed by a vast amount of information, my "common sense" as a parent hadn't developed yet. Before my son was born, this was my favorite baby care book. My husband and I were actually able to read this one and get something out of it! I love the organization, the brevity, and the clear-cut information. The fact that it's organized by topic, rather than by age, makes this a wonderful way to get a big-picture look at what a baby's first year looks like. For people who haven't been around many babies, this is extremely helpful.
The medical advice in the book is comprehensive and clear. It's the only baby care book we purchased that includes torticollis, a condition my son had that a surprisingly few number of books even mention. I have referred to this book again and again for a variety of specific questions, and amazingly, answers are almost always present. It is extremely helpful to have a concise guide to American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. We draw from a range of philosophies as we make our parenting decisions, but knowing AAP stances provides an essential baseline for surveying the rest of the landscape. Just know when you purchase this book that the authors are dismissive of many other (attachment, etc.) philosophies. Advice on vaccines, sleep, baby carriers, and other topics dear to attachment parents are covered here in a very one-sided way. I didn't mind this. "Baby 411" is part of a larger family library we have, and it provides an intelligent counterpoint to Dr. Sears, etc., as we make decisions. But again, this book is not for everyone.
All that being said, I think this book is way off base on the sleep advice. I read this book closely before my son was born and read the sleep chapter several times. I was ready to hit the ground running. Whether it was colic, temperament, or the phases of the moon, this book's approach to sleep training has never helped my son and I get sleep. It wasn't until I was able to totally discard this book's sleep philosophy that my son made progress. The way the sleep information is framed, I spent the first five months of my son's life feeling GUILTY -- on top of the exhaustion -- for his "poor sleep habits." After reading more widely, I have found that my son perfectly fit the description of a fussy/colicy baby in "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child," and that my son's sleep progression as an older baby perfectly fit Dr. Weissbluth's description of a post-colic baby. "Baby 411" draws some very hard lines, and we found that we served our son much better when we followed our own instincts -- and other advice.
For the extent to which this book set us back on sleep and parenting confidence, and for contributing in many ways to an extremely difficult first few months after birth, I would give this book one star. But in every other way, I think it is a five-star book. I have come to think of this book as a useful articulation of AAP positions and a medical troubleshooting guide, while my others were more like owners manuals. It was incredibly helpful before my son was born, when we knew nothing. It's worth the purchase, even if the sleep chapter is discarded. And if the sleep advice works for you, then all the better.
If you happen to read this review and have a child who simply does not fit the "Baby 411" sleep picture, I highly recommend Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and The Happiest Baby on the Block: The New Way to Calm Crying and Help Your Newborn Baby Sleep Longer.
