Book Reviews of Babyville: A NovelBook Review: These women are pathetic Summary: 1 Stars
This book deserves negative stars.
Babyville is separated into three segments: Julia, Maeve, and Sam. These women all know each other and their stories overlap. The book begins with Julia's segment. Julia is a 33 year old woman with the mental age of your average 20 year old (who, on average, has a mental age of about 10). She is a "smart and sassy" television producer/somethingorother who is involved in a long term relationship (4 years) with a man named Mark, the corporation's lawyer. Julia describes her relationship as "Falling into like", she wasn't particularly attracted to Mark but he liked her and all of the other girls at the office thought he was hot, so what the hell. Four years later Mark has bought a large house in which they share, takes care of all the "grown up things" like paying the bills that Julia racks up on her crazy shopping sprees, and cooking dinner for the two of them. Meanwhile Julia is desperately trying to get pregnant because she thinks that maybe having a baby will make her relationship with Mark better (because that is always a good idea).
Fortunately, Julia is unable to get pregnant and after about 100 pages of listening to her whine about how unhappy she is she gets into an argument with Mark and flies to New York for a vacation with one of her girl friends who lives in NYC. While in NYC Julia spends thousands of dollars a day at designer clothing stores (because apparently that is what you are supposed to do in the city), going to the gym (but only after applying 2.5lbs of makeup) and sipping "skinny" lattes and eating a low fat cracker or two. This is during the day. At night Julia goes out to bars (every night) where she flirts with lots of men and gets too drunk to remember any of these men, or exactly what she did, the next morning. One of these men calls her back and Julia proceeds to go out on a date with him and kiss him. Remember, she does still have a boyfriend of four years who, a week ago, she was trying to get pregnant with. Yeah.
This was as far as I got. I couldn't bring myself to read the "Maeve" and "Sam" sections but according the to back of the book Maeve is a tramp who likes to sleep with lots of men but doesn't have a committed relationship with any of them. Unlike Julia, Maeve does not want children but ends up pregnant. Sam on the other hand is married, and is pregnant, and is considering having an affair with a married man! Wonderful.
Babyville makes me sick. The values (or rather, lack of values) is appalling (sleeping around is great, especially when you're already in a committed relationship, Dieting and looking younger should be your main goals in life- so that you can attract a young, rich man of course, and Getting drunk and partying like you're some misguided college waste is so the coolest thing to do when you're in your 30s). The characters were the most immature "adults" I've ever seen. The characters and the real life women who eat this garbage up need to grow up, get their priorities straight and realize what it means to be a mature adult (having responsibilities and taking responsibility for your actions). I'm so disgusted, you can find more respectable people on day time talk shows.
Oh, and I forgot to mention Jane Green cannot write to save her life. She needs to review the elementary school lesson about "Proper Tenses".

Summary of Babyville: A NovelMeet Julia, a wildly successful television producer who appears to have the picture-perfect life. But beneath the surface, things are not as perfect as they seem. Stuck in a loveless relationship with her boyfriend, Mark, Julia thinks a baby is the answer . . . but she may want a baby more than she wants her boyfriend. Maeve, on the other hand, is allergic to commitment. A feisty, red-haired, high-power career girl, she breaks out in a rash every time she passes a stroller. But when her no-strings-attached nightlife leads to an unexpected pregnancy, her reaction may be just as unexpected . . . And then there?s Samantha?happily married and eager to be the perfect June-Cleaver mother. But baby George brings only exhaustion, extra pounds, and marital strife to her once tidy life. Is having an affair with a friend?s incredibly sexy husband the answer?
With Babyville, bestselling author Jane Green applies her golden touch to the next phase of a girl?s life. By turns witty, rollicking, and tender, this sparkling, sexy tale about the complexities of modern motherly love isn?t really a story about babies?it?s about three friends whose lives are suddenly turned upside down by that life-changing event that hangs over the head of every single girl: motherhood.
