Book Reviews of Backyard BBQ: The Art of Smokology

Book Review: Some good references, but not much for the beginner.
Summary: 2 Stars

Not a good first book for smokers; this book provides precious little information for the beginning smoker. While the author starts off with basic information, he quickly skips to advanced recipes. There are very few basic recipes for the beginner found on these pages. I also find the author to be a bit jaded and unwilling to accept any methods of cooking other than his own.
If you're a curious cook who likes to start with some basic guidelines and go from there, this book is not for you. If you are an experienced smoker looking to pick up a few new recipes, you may benefit from this book.

Book Review: Smoking to a higher level
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried two recipes out of this book and I got rave reviews of each. First I made the twice smoked pulled pork for a group of friends and they ate it all and were upset that all was gone. I then made the Hell fire brisket. This was as good or better than the first recipe. I have a "gator pit" smoker and this has taken me and my smoker to a new level. I am new to smoking but this book will WoW my friends.
Just the Do's and Don't section is worth the price. The whole information section at the beginning of the book is a must for anyone interested in improving smoking skills. What a find!

Book Review: A great resource for using smokers
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a book that is a must have for people that smoke their meats; not just grilling.
The author really knows the subject and writes well so that most anyone knows exactly how to do it. He has some fantastic recipes that I am looking forward to making. Including marinades, and rubs. I don't have a lot of experience in smoking so I don't know things that he may have left out; and I have not had time to try out the recipes, so I can't say they taste great. However, I have been cooking and grilling for many years, and I think I know what a good recipes looks like.

Book Review: Championship Results from this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently entered my first copmetition BBQ event.

By following the lesssons learned in this wonderful book, I finsihed 2nd in the Pork Shoulder entry.

I followed the "Twice Smoked Pulled Pork" directions on page 157 and I got my 15 seconds of fame and $100. There were 28 teams and I finished 11th overall by following the guidance of Chef Richard.

Thank You Chef Richard.

Great Book and Great Results. My next competition is on 14, 15, 16 July. I expect to win the big one!

BillyBob's Blow'n Smoke BBQ

Book Review: Clear and Useful
Summary: 5 Stars

Since getting excited about smoking and BBQueing, I have picked up 8 to 10 different books. This book is by far the best. It goes straight to the point, is clear and easily understood, and does not try to be cute or folksie.

The recipies are tasty, but the organization of the sub recepies are a bit cumbersome; not enough to detract from the excellent reference that the book represents.

Basic explainations of the "how to" are matched with the "why to" giving the reader the foundations to grow their understanding of what works when.
