Book Reviews of Baking: From My Home to YoursBook Review: My go-to baking book Summary: 5 Stars
This is an absolutely fantastic book with a wide breadth of recipes. I appreciate Greenspan's charming descriptions of the recipes and her "playing around" sections where she offers alternatives for a given recipe (this essentially doubles the number of recipes in the book). The photos are gorgeous and my finished products come out looking like hers. I have made her all-in-one holiday cake 15 or so times and it is frequently requested at potlucks and family get togethers (I slice the apples rather than dice them and lay them in a middle layer between the batter). The sugar-topped molasses spice cookies are also a big hit and people always ask me how they turn out so perfectly round and consistent. Other recipes I've tried and loved are her lemon poppy seed muffins (your kitchen will smell like heaven), carrot spice muffins, cranberry upside-downer cake (absolutely delicious), cranberry shortbread cake, and blueberry brown sugar plain cake. The only recipe I was disappointed in was the flip-over plum cake. It wasn't bad, just not exciting. I was lucky and picked this book up for $7.95 in a bargain bin but would gladly pay full price for it.
Book Review: Baking must Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book! But what else to expect from Dorie Greenspan? Her instructions are always so concise and easy to follow, that it is really impossible to get anything less than the desired result. Plus, it's a beautiful book, with gorgeous pictures. It is a large book, fit for a coffee table, but it's also easy to just place it on a counter and refer to it as you bake. But it's not completely wasted on a coffee table either, as Dorie Greenspan is extremely fun to read with plenty of anecdotes and an impersonal, friendly style.
This book has recipes that are much simpler and "homier" than the recipes in her previous books, but they are even more enjoyable for that. There is a large section on breakfast treats (like muffins, scones, biscuits, and cakes) which is excellent. I have already tried her berry muffins, which are incredibly easy to make. The cookie section is also extensive and includes recipes like granola cookies as well as unbelievably delicious sables.
There's nothing very fancy in this book, but it's a book that anyone can enjoy baking from. I know I am!!
Book Review: My current favorite baking book Summary: 4 Stars
I actually bought this book for myself on a whim a few months ago because I read a glowing review about it. Since I've received it, it has become my favorite book for making desserts. I've tried about 10 of the recipes so far and with the exception of one, they have all been fantastic. I've tried the Chocolate Chunkers, Brownie Buttons, Applesauce Spice Bars, Caramel Brownie Cake, Florida Pie and a few others. All were delicious and easy to make. That is one of the great things about this book - the author actually explains every detail. The only recipe I had problems with was the Black and White Banana Loaf and it was a total disaster for me (I'm sure it was something I did!). My only quibble about the book is that it is unweildly and hard to keep open. It won't stay open if you are in the habit of following a recipe in the book as you make it. Therefore, you can have to find a weight to hold the pages down. And, as someone else mentioned, not all recipes have photos. That is important to me! Still, I love this book and I know that I'll be using it for years to come.
Book Review: Best Book Ever Summary: 5 Stars
I have baked a lot of the recipes and everything I tried turned out beautifully. Dorie's book has brought so much joy to our lives. For example, I baked one of her chocolate cakes and took it outside for the kids to eat and they all said that it was the best cake they ever had.
Her instructions are easy to understand and to follow and her recipes always taste incrdible. Normally I mark in books the recipes I like, but with her book, I have given up the marking because everything I try is the best I ever made.
I even tried recipes of items that I usually don't like, but she convinced my otherwise. For example, my family does not usually like corn bread, but they sure ate Dorie's corn muffins and asked if I could make them again the next day.
Dorie put a lot of effort into this book and it certainly shows.

Book Review: Excellent Book for Beginner Bakers Summary: 5 Stars
I am a beginner baker, and the first recipe I tried in the book was the blueberry pie, as blueberries are in season. I was shocked and surprised to find that it actually tasted great! The sweet pie crust recipe was excellent, and the filling was very simple. The second recipe I tried was the corny corn muffins which were excellent with fresh sweet corn cut from the cob. It was easy and moist and delicious. The third recipe I tried was the french fresh strawberry tart, but in this instance the instructions for pressing the curst into the tart pan were a little obscure. For the fourth recipe, I was feeling confident as my previous three ventures were so successful, and tried the black and white cake for my friend's birthday dinner. It was a two day venture, and while the end product was okay, the cake itself was a little dry, which I am going to assume was my own fault. She has really given me confidence in baking, which is a joyous revelation! Her tips for every recipe were just little jewels as well. This was an excellent book, and I cannot wait to try more!
