Book Reviews of Baking: From My Home to Yours

Book Review: WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! Every recipe is easy, straightforward, successful, and most importantly, delicious. I always know that any one of Dorie's recipes will be a hit. Ever since buying this book, I haven't used any of my other cookbooks. I love how the chapters are separated by "genre" and how each chapter and recipe is preceded by a short anecdote about the recipe or about one of Dorie's cooking experiences. Dorie is down-to-earth, friendly, and tasteful, and it shows in her recipes and in her writing (I also know this because I've been lucky enough to exchange emails with her and she's absolutely LOVELY!). Buying this book was one of the greatest decisions I made regarding cooking. I use it faithfully and when I'm not cooking from it, I'm reading it or just flipping through the pages and admiring the beautiful photographs. =)

(I only wish there were more cookie recipes and some more French recipes, like macarrons, similar to those in her "Paris Sweets" book, though "Baking" easily easily easily trumps "Paris Sweets.")

Book Review: Just the BEST!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been baking most of my life, well over 50 years, and I have countless cookbooks, many of which are baking specific. This one is the BEST. Ms. Greenspan gives detailed instructions for the most delicious recipes ever. I keep trying new ones and each is better than the last. The "All In One Holiday Bundt Cake" was moist and had just about every holiday ingredient possible in one cake. The "Cornmeal Shortbread Cookies" were perfection! The cornmeal gave the buttery shortbread a nice, gritty CRUNCH that was SO GOOD. But my very favorite, the one my family swooned over and I still dream about at night is "The Most Extraordinary French Lemon Cream Tart". If you are a lemon lover (and there ARE many of us out there!) this is the queen mother of all desserts. The crust is like a shortbread cookie, nice and rich and crunchy, but the filling...oh, my! Lemon velvet! Tart and sweet at the same time, but balanced. What a treasure trove of baking recipes. I can't wait to try more.

Book Review: Obessively Perfected Recipes + Great Tips = Exceptional Results!
Summary: 5 Stars

I own five books on baking and this one is the best. The recipes are masterly formulated and beyond delicious. I have never experienced a book that is so accurate with oven time--when it states thirty minutes, believe it! Even "ordinary" dishes like biscuits or coffee cake become epicurean delights with her tweaking. I became a much, much better baker because of the tips included in the recipes (flavoring sugar by pinching it with zest, using White Lily flour for my biscuits, dusting berries with flour before adding them to the batter, etc.). Trust me, even if you already have great recipes, use her tips and watch them soar to new levels.

The recipes I have tried included ingredients already in my kitchen. I've yet to run to a specialty market for an exotic ingredient. It's her measurements and the way she incorporates the ingredients that make her recipes outstanding. I urge you to follow them exactly before altering them for your own taste.

Book Review: FANTASTIC BAKING BOOK - A MUST HAVE
Summary: 5 Stars

I am long overdue in writing a review of this fantastic book. Dorie Greenspan writes this for all bakers. An expert baker will enjoy the book and a neophyte baker will enjoy the ability to create fabulous sweets because of Dorie's guidance. It is a welcome pleasure to find a cookbook that explains details of the baking process, what to expect in results (World Peace cookies: "the rounds are likely to crack as you're cutting them, don't be concerned, just squeeze the bits back onto each cookie") gives "playing around" ideas to create different outcomes by changing flavor, additions, etc. Dorie writes with a clear and easy style. While viewing the recipes, you feel like you are reading notes and directions from an old friend. I love that she shares the history of the recipes, such as source for her rugelach cookies. I have recommended this book to many of my baking friends and everyone has thanked me! I can't wait for her next book, "Around the French Table".

Book Review: Great all-purpose desserts book
Summary: 5 Stars

I love to cook/bake and have tons of cookbooks but this is the one book I turn to over and over when I want to make a baked good/dessert. Dorie Greenspan covers such a broad range of topics in this book and each recipe I have tried has been a success! I could never make a tall, fluffy biscuit (and tried several recipes) until I came across her Basic Biscuit recipe. Now this is the only biscuit recipe I use! I also love her recipe for corn muffins, scones, pastry cream, espresso shortbread, and apple pie (she has a great tip for keeping the bottom crust from getting soggy).

No, this book does not cover yeast breads but I like that she includes recipes for things like pastry cream and lemon curd instead. Yes, some of the recipes have lengthy lists of ingredients and time consuming preparation but there are so many more basic, homey recipes to choose from. Great essential baking book that I recommend to everyone!!
