Book Reviews of Baking: From My Home to YoursBook Review: AMAZING! Summary: 5 Stars
Being an avid baker, needless to say and also a collector of cookbooks! This one however has become my all time favourite and when I am in the mood to cook up something delicious or naughty this is the first thing I will grab! Have never had any problems with any recipes (enough though I am an Australian and we use the metric system) and there is also good column space down the side the write little notes or slight recipes changes!
My personal favourites would have to be the florida Pie, World Peace Cookies and Peanut Butter Chocolate Torte! Yummo!!!!
If you are still a little unsure of the book and need a little more swaying type into google "tuesdays with dorie" and see the delicious things people have made! The book is so popular there is a blog group where every tuesday people cook something from the book! To cook from the book that regular it HAS to tell you its definitely amazing!
Book Review: Excellent and not intimidating for beginners Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased "Baking" three weeks ago. I bought it based on a friend's recommendation and the reviews here. I am not disappointed. I am a beginner baker and my adventures with the oven have not all been successful, to say the least. I have made three recipes from this book so far: the orange berry muffins, the great grains muffins and the best chocolate chip cookies. I found the recipes very clearly written and all the instructions were easy to follow. The chocolate chip cookies in particular were a huge hit with my family, and my daughters have asked for them again. Again, I'm no expert in baking and was very happy to get a request for a repeat performance from my family. If I can follow these instructions, anyone can.
I also found the Dessert Maker's glossary to be really helpful in understanding the steps and ingredients involved.
All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase.
Book Review: So far, so good Summary: 4 Stars
So far I've only made a couple of recipes from this book (shortbread cookies, cheesecake, brown sugar blueberry cake, brioche, and pecan honey sticky buns). Cheesecake and brioche are two of my favorite things to make (and consume) and the cheesecake and brioche I made using Dorie Greenspan's recipe were the best I've ever had. The shortbread cookie dough was simple to make. I used it as the base for my cheesecake and got rave reviews. The pecan honey sticky buns and brown sugar blueberry cake were made for a bake sale and sold out. One lady bought a bun in the morning and came back a couple of hours later for a second. The brioche is hard work but so worth it. I think next time I'll make a big batch and freeze it. Besides the recipes, I like that Dorie Greenspan includes a section on how to make slight variations. I will definitely be trying more of the recipes from this book.
Book Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
I call this my "magical baking book." I've made some truly amazing cakes and cookies in the three years I've owned it. My favorite is the carrot cake using the suggested dried cranberry substitution for the raisins. I always hated the raisins in carrot cake and the lemon added to the cream cheese frosting gives the cake a little umph. Almond flour substituting part of your regular flour in the crust of the Crunchy and Custardy Peach tart? Fantastic! Adding cinnamon and instant coffee to almost flourless brownies earned a penciled in "Holy cow, these are good" heading from me. It's these little flavor extras that make the recipes so good. I've never had any trouble following any of the recipes and I've made at least 30 of them at this point. There are some that aren't as great as others, but I haven't made anything that wasn't rated at least "tasty" in my book.
Book Review: Just Buying it for the World Peace Cookies would be a bargain Summary: 5 Stars
It's difficult to add to the comments that have already been made about this book, so I'll be pithy.
1. The World Peace Cookies alone are magnificent. I've now won 2 baking contests with them (giving her full credit of course), and I cannot think of a better cookie in the world.
2. Everything I've tried has come out perfectly (the poundcake puts Sara Lee to shame.... and I love Sara Lee).
3. There is a dessert for virtually every taste style and season. From my 4 year old to my 76 year old mom, no one is disappointed. It's the first place I look for something new to try.
4. The recipes range from traditional to . .. . Whoa! What a wonderful compendium, whether you want to have a simple (but perfect) chocolate chip cookie, or something a little more daring (like a prune dessert).
