Book Reviews of Baking: From My Home to Yours

Book Review: Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just had the great good fortune to meet Dorie Greenspan in person, and listen to her tell some of the stories you'll find in this book. If nothing else, the friendly tone and wonderful anecdotes you get from this witty gentle soul is well worth the price of the book... but lucky for you, there's much more there! These are a master baker's favorite tried-and-true recipes, the ones that were scribbled on grease-stained notebook pages and backs of envelopes, slipped from one friend to another after a wonderful luncheon. This book feels like a genuine treasure, and as soon as you try out a few of the recipes, you'll realize there's not a clunker in the whole batch. Do yourself (or the baker in your family) a favor and run, don't walk, to get your hands on a copy of this book.

Book Review: Why didn't I buy this book sooner?
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is one of my new favourites and I only wished I had purchased it sooner. Every recipe I've tried has turned out beautifully.
For each recipe,Dorie has an amazing ability to make it feel like she's standing right next to you in the kitchen talking you through the steps.
There is also a hints and tips page for each section, in which Dorie goes into great detail so you get the best results possible.
I also love the 'playing around' extras for each recipe - it's basically giving you lots of variations to one recipe.
With 300+ recipes in this book, plus the tips, hints and variations, on these things alone I highly recommend the book. The fact that you also get the wonderful narration and stories from Dorie is a fabulous bonus!

Book Review: Fabulous Book
Summary: 4 Stars

The only reason I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars is due to being picky about photos. The photographs in this book are beautiful, I only wish there were more. Particularly for the interesting recipes like Brioche Snails.
This is a perfectly delicious book for home bakers who want to have a professional result. The recipes are easy to follow and the descriptions are drool worthy.
I love the forward to each chapter offering anecdotes and baking tips.
My house is currently filled with the tempting scent of Nana Choco bread (awaiting tomorrow morning's addition of a cuppa espresso) and tomorrow I'll be making the brioche.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book and find myself pouring over it when I have a free moment.

Book Review: Another winner from Dorie Greenspan
Summary: 4 Stars

Another wonderful compendium of recipes from Ms. Greenspan! Well written, easy to follow, wonderful recipes! I have tried quite a few including the scones, apple bars, sables, chocolate chip cookie, World Peace cookies. All were quickly gobbled up by my family and friends. Ms. Greenspan has developed quite a following, for her reliable recipes and friendly writing style. If you would like to try some of the recipes from the book, go to her blog or to Tuesdays with Dorie blog. I would have given this book 5 stars if Ms. Greenspan had included weights in her recipes. Her Paris Sweets (another wonderful book) included weights for ingredients, I wonder why she chose not to for this book but this would not deter me from purchasing this book!

Book Review: Hit or Miss, but the Hits are Perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a tough one to review. A handful of the recipes, most notably the honey peach ice cream and Bill's Big Carrot Cake, are so spectacular that they alone merit a five-star assessment. However, they are many flops (for some reason I have had difficulty with her custard-oriented inclusions, such as the classic pastry cream and vanilla pudding, not to mention the chocolate chip cookies and chocolate-malt whoppers were both underwhelming). But summer's first batch of honey peach ice cream just finished churning and it was so delicious I ran straight to the computer to spread the gospel. Buy the book, and you will take away recipes that will become timeless classics in your kitchen. You just may have to hunt for them.
