Book Reviews of Barbed Wire BattlegroundBook Review: Trinity Prep School Summary: 5 StarsI admit to a lack of knowledge when it comes to war tactics. Actually, I studied military science in college for a few years. Predictably, we learned about artillery, army formations, rank hierarchies, and types of army land/air vehicles utilized in war. But this book is about none of the typical war tactics. Barbed-Wire Battleground by R.J O'Brien focuses on the most powerful weapon used to win our modern day wars. The weapon is propaganda.
This book weaves a tale of espionage and communist propaganda during the Korean War. Based on many personal experiences as an MP in the Korean War, the author exposes the secret world of agents and double agents. Spinning political agendas and public image are tools governments use to influence public opinion and support. This book provides insight into the inner workings of war and the role of leadership and rhetoric. As North Koreans currently build their nuclear capabilities, reading about communist philosophy and tactics during the Korean War gives the reader pause. Artillery power is important during military conflicts, but the battleground is much more far-reaching. Read this book to understand how governments can win battles in the minds of their people.
Recommended for readers high school-adult. Descriptions of the real war atrocities during communist reign is not suitable for younger readers.
Summary of Barbed Wire BattlegroundThis book deals with the control, by a North Korean Colonel P.O.W., of some of the prison compounds located on the island of Koje during the Korean war. His efforts were aimed at disrupting the peace talks in progress at Panunjom to gain concessions from the United Nation's Forces. He received directions from his high command via newly captured North Korean prisoners.
