Book Review: Elin Hilderbrand's Barefoot
Summary: 3 Stars
I picked up the book Barefoot along with about 3 others from the author Elin Hilderbrand. As I quite often do, I read books that are on the New York Times best sellers list, and Elin Hilderbrand was one of those authors. Her book "The Castaways" became a New York Times Best Seller in 2009, which made her books stand out to me. I have yet to read "The Castaways," but did read "The Blue Bistro," which she wrote as well, and I became a fan of her writing about normal every day characters.
Barefoot is a book that surprised me. I started out not liking any of the characters, and surprisingly ended up loving them all. Each character had their own reason for being who they were, and I was endeared to each of them. However, it wasn't until halfway through the book that I became involved enough with the characters that I wanted to continue reading.
The story is about 3 women who disappear for the summer to Nantucket at a cottage near the beach. Vicki is diagnosed with lung cancer and decides to go away for the summer to get her chemo. She takes her sister, Brenda, her friend Melanie, and her 2 children with her. Brenda is saddled with money problems and a broken heart. This is due to her affair with one of her college students which gets her fired, and destruction of property that lands her in a law suit. Melanie finds that her husband is cheating on her after a lost battle of them trying to get pregnant. Once she finds out about his ongoing affair, which he does not plan to end, she discovers she is pregnant. A perfect reason to disappear for the summer. A college student home for the summer meets the women upon their arrival at the airport and eventually ends up working for them to watch Vicki's 2 boys each day. His presence in the story seems to confirm the fact that Brenda and Melanie are very self centered women, because instead of helping Vicki out as they were intended to do, they instead let a stranger do it, while they wallow in their own pain. But I like this type of story, because it is realistic. Human beings are self-centered by nature, no matter how badly they may love or want to help someone. The story ends differently then I had wanted it to, but probably because it was more of a realistic ending.
I recommend that women who are reading Romance Novels put Elin Hilderbrand books on their list of things to read. The next book I will read that is currently sitting on my bookshelf is "A Summer Affair," which is also by Elin Hilderbrand.
Summary of Barefoot: A Novel
Three women arrive at the local airport, observed by Josh, a Nantucket native home from college for the summer. Burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues, the women-- two sisters and one friend--make their way to the sisters' tiny cottage, inherited from an aunt. They're all trying to escape from something: Melanie, after seven failed in-vitro attempts, learned her husband was having an affair, and then discovered she's pregnant; Brenda embarked on a passionate affair with an older student that got her fired from her prestigious job as a professor in New York; and her sister Vicki, mother to two small boys, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Soon Josh is part of the chaotic household, acting as babysitter, confidant, and, eventually, lover.Women's Fiction Books
