I read this book when it was first published, and I have returned to it again and again. I like the recipes, and I recognize many of them from my Mother's life-long collection of recipes. The book is so well-written and reads so easily, and the anecdotes make one laugh aloud. But, an epiphany takes place. Yes, the book is humorous, but the humor is founded on the fact that this book is non-fiction. There may be some name-changes and some discreet altering of facts, but this book is based on truth. This is the way it is done in the Mississippi Delta as well as the "Old South." What a glorious thing it is to be born, raised, live, and die in the South. This is what God meant by the "Promised Land." This book will give the reader a humorous and an accurate view of the funerary practices in the Old South, and by extension, a look at life
(as well as death) in the South. Women, men, and whole families should "read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest" this book.
