Book Reviews of Belly Button Book (Boynton on Board)

Book Review: Not weird! Fantastic!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was in TJ Max with my 13 yr old daughter and her friend and we came across this book. The girls loved the book so much. They stood there and read it out loud, taking turns, giggling. Then my daughter asked me if we could purchase the book for our home so she could read it to her 5 yr old brother. What a big hit. My 10 yr old daughter then was upset that she didn't get to read the book to her brother.
Any one who has dealt with teenagers and younger syblings can appreciate the value of a book bringing children together. I also enjoyed the cute little story about a baby hipo, who calls his belly button, "bee-bo" and when all the hippos go to belly button beach and wear swimmming suits too small so they can show off their buttons. Cute imagination from the author, I have several of her books and they have all been well liked by the children. Another favorite of mine is the book, Moo La La. The books hold up really well.

Book Review: Another winner from Boynton
Summary: 5 Stars

Sandra Boynton has, for many years, written books that my child and many others I know hold as their favorites. With this latest, spun from Philadelphia Chickens, she's created another one that both parents and children will love.

Featuring a bunch of hippos playing on the beach, the song is an homage to our belly buttons. Knowing the fascination that so many kids have with their navel, this one is sure to please. The hippo illustrations are exactly what you'd expect from Boynton, and the rhymes are silly fun. And anyone who reads this one will especially enjoy the hippo baby who can only say, "Bee-bo," when referring to their belly button.

Boynton seems to have an amazing understanding and perception of exactly what young children will enjoy in a board book. This is another winner, to add to an already extensive list of impressive works.

Book Review: The World's most perfect book in the eyes of a 16-month-old
Summary: 5 Stars

My son picked this book out at our last trip to the library. That was over three weeks ago. Since then, he has insisted on us reading it at least once every day and gets quite upset when I try to suggest another book. Sometimes we read it twice in a row! Obviously, before this book is returned to the library we will have to purchase our own copy. My son has two favorite parts to this book: The first is when the hippopotomus is explaining what "bee bo" means (BELLY BUTTON!!!); my son breaks out in a huge grin there. The second is for the belly button song. I'm not sure what the tune to the song is so we just made something up but there's no avoiding having to sing the song repeatedly. My son won't let me turn the page until I've sung several rounds. This was a surprise hit for us and I highly recommend it for anyone in this age group.

Book Review: Lacking the Boynton magic
Summary: 2 Stars

I am a big fan of several of Boynton's books including
"Barnyard Dance", "A is for Angry", "Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs" and "The Going to Bed Book".

Those all have charm, wit and a resonance with me. The Belly Button book had a lot of potential but just didn't come across. The prose is stitled and awkward in its phrasing and rhyming and doesn't always make much sense. For instance, there are some hippos at the beach and the text says "We don't do much throughout the day. That's how we like it best. We nibble grapes and watch the waves. We take a little rest." Maybe I'm missing something.... What does this have to do with belly buttons and why are they eating grapes?

Oh well. I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 because her drawings are still warm and friendly.

Book Review: My daughter's favorite!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter is only 4 months old, but, for some reason, she LOVES this book. We read together all the time, and we read many different books, but this is her favorite. When I get it out she wiggles and smiles. She loves to hold the side of the book and turn the pages. When I sing the little song near the end, she makes noise and sings along. We have so much fun reading this book. I saw that some reviewers were upset that the hippos wear "bathing suits too little". For goodness sake, these are drawings of hippos! It is funny! How are the hippos supposed to show off their belly buttons in a one-piece? :) We love this book. I think it's funny for both kids and parents. The drawings are very cute.
