Book Reviews of Bend-the-Rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew

Book Review: IN PRAISE OF OATMEAL'S REVIEW (July 7, 2007)
Summary: 4 Stars

Dear Oatmeal (Author of the "Ambiguous" Review)

Just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your honesty and straightforwardness! I have never sewn more than a button on a shirt (if you could call it that) and attempted to sew a (truly pathetic looking) hem.

I concluded from the majority of the other reviews, that this book would indeed be helpful for the beginner. I'm so glad you shared your input.

Clearly, this book is a magnificent read. I value the glowing reviews as well, and realize this book is a treasure: entertaining, informative, creative and full of projects. Eventually, I hope to have learned enough to take full advantage of such a gem!

Currently however, I'm searching for guidance and step-by-step instructions pertaining to the most basic of sewing techniques, (I'm talkin' A, B, C!) Anything more difficult will only cause further confusion and lead me to more frustration! So thanks again!

By the way, any recommendations regarding other resources intended for the true novice?

I'm not striving to create outfits, utilize patterns, invest in a Bernina, etc. (Oh, how I wish I had the talent and ability! It's difficult enough to find clothes in my size worthy of the added expense of alterations!) However, I've come to acknowledge & accept with certainty, my limitations when handling needle & thread! Aware of this ineptitude, I only hope my humble expectations will provide me with the competence required to make a few minor alterations and sew the simplest of repairs. When it comes to the art of sewing and me, even such modest goals could prove to be overly ambitious!

The motivation driving my desire to (attempt to) conquer the basics one more time, stems from my size. I am barely 5 feet tall, 93 lbs. & I can no longer stomach (nor afford) to take every article of clothing I purchase to be altered. My goal is to learn how to shorten sleeves, hem pants, mend a seam, sew a button on (properly), etc. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but these are difficult challenges for me!

I suspect most people easily master these basic skills, with either minimal or no guidance, (perhaps no more than a bit of research on the web is required.) Unfortunately, this didn't work for me! I must have printed out the equivalent of a "tree" worth of various instructions and images. Yet, I still could not perform the simple task of sewing a passable hem by hand! (I won't embarrass myself further by disclosing the inordinate length of time it took me to complete hemming one pair of pants!) That said, the end result was . . . well, at best they looked as though an orangutan had altered them!

In conclusion, any suggestions with regard to books/resources suited toward "basic sewing for dummies" (with no prior experience) would be most appreciated.

I welcome and encourage all input!

Thanks in advance,

DyannLynn
